Neighbor has a deckover flatbed trailor he built from a mobil home frame 14 years ago. It has been shedded all these years. It is 78" wide, 17' long plus beaver tail, two 6,000# axels, (12,000# gross vehicle trailor) 8x14.5 tires, brakes on both axels, 2" white oak decking, jack, spare tire, lights. The fellow planned on using it for his skid loader but never did. Fellow is retiring now. I don't question his honesty. It has been used very little since it was built in '91. I would like to add 9" to each side to make it 8' wide. 2 5/16" hitch ball. I checked, Wisconsin DOT says mobile home axels, brakes, and tires are legal (tires say 'for mobile home use only' but do nat say they are only for non-highway use). Trailor still needs the brakes hooked up. Just has the wires with connectors sticking out of the inside of the wheel. Brakes guarenteed not to be froze/rusted up. Trailor would need to be inspected by DOT and given a VIN#. Everything is very nicely welded/assembled. Commercial built Rainbow brand deck over 8'x16' plus 2' beaver tail=$4500. Trailor would largely be used locally to haul my DC/SC CASES. Maybe a 930 every now and then. May haul a few big bales. Trailor looks heavy duty to me. Constructed from 12" I-beam. I think he will chisel a little on the $1200 price. I know mobile home axels, etc. are controvercial, but what do you think?

I had a trailer my Dad & I built. Heavy I-Beams & mobile-home axles. After thinking of the liabilities it could cause... I sold it to a friend for 200 dollars... He promised me he would only use it to haul hay on the farm.

I feel that I need to respond to those who doubt the tires. I work in construction and a lot of homes come in sections. I have personally watched the guys load the tires and axles back up to take them to the plant to get put on another trailer. They get reused, had a guy tell me the only difference between them and lowboy tires is the "Mobile Home Use Only" on the side. P.S. We have a homemade 6x12 Utility that the WDOT passed and gave a VIN to. I know lots of guys complain about MH axles, but we have yet to have an axle or a tire fail on us in the last 20 years or so.

my two cents.

I've priced a Top of the Line, 20 ft bumper pull 12K trailer, 2 axle brakes, sealed beam lights, new tires, flip-up ramps, All DOT lighting & reflectors, 2-5/16" adjustable hight ball hitch, 10,000# side-crank landing gear, Choice of five powder-coat colors, Right in Madison, WI, made in north-eastern Iowa..... $3400 plus tax & license. I'd leave the home-made trailer sit. You get something as heavy as a 930 Case on a Deck-over You better have a small medium duty truck or a 1-ton dually pulling it. Plus if the deck-over is made from 12" I-beam, I'm not sure the 930 wouldn't severly over-load the trailer anyhow.

I had a trailer with mobile home axles and the best thing I ever did was get rid of it and go with a factory built name brand. Spring and shackles don't hold up and the brakes aren't as good either. A lot of makers are going to the torque flex axles that use no springs or shackles this is the way to go ,you also get a lower deck height and smoother ride.

Glenn
You say tires are marked"mobile home use only" & need DOT inspection. If an inspector passes it, I want his/her badge number so I can get that person disciplined/fired.Mobile home tires are made for one trip only, not designed to last for more than a couple hundred miles. That would be a bad wreck looking for a place to happen.
Getting off my soapbox now

Sorry willie have to disagree with you on that one mobile home tires will last several thousand miles , made a goose neck from one and it got pulled all over the place and those tires hold up well . And besides as others have said we have a guy from georgia that buys them by the semi load and takes them back to factory and uses them over and over.

You can buy a brand new trailer equipped the way you want it, ready to hook on and go, for under $4,000. Why mess around with one that needs a lot of work and still doesn't meet your needs?

I understand your thinking but I believe that by the time you get the homemade trailer in a condition where you can use it safely you will have spent that $2,800, or close to it, and you still won't have as good a trailer. Those mobile home tires just won't cut the mustard, so right off the git-go you will be buying four brand new tires.

I appreciate/respect your opinion/advice. A bargain isn't always a bargain! I don't think this trailor will sell over night. I'm not going to move too quickly. Thanks, Glenn F.

I assume this is a bumper-hitch? Not familiar with DC or SC, but personally I wouldn't put a 930 on a bumper pull, unless the truck was bigger than a 1 ton. I've pulled bigger tractors on a goose-neck, but..... ...My opinion only.

Your biggest problem is the brakes most of them haven't worked in years so a complete brake job is in the books so to speak. If they are the old axles you may be able to go with a rim that will have a 15 inch tire. I built one that has 4 15 inch and 2 14.5 and I will be replaceing the 14.5 axle soon
