have a new pondand just stocked it with fingerlings. it didn,t take very long for the turtles to move in [ big time]. can someone send me a diagram of a good working trap for these critters. i thank you for any help. my email is open. have a good day.

Interesting subject...I came from a turtle catching family.....brothers and I reached up under the banks and grabbed them and brought them out. Occasionally someone will get bit and as a poster said...they won"t let go. BUT, if you light your Bic lighter and hold it under the tail...they"ll let go. Always carried a first aid kit with us just in case.....and you don"t reach with your fingers sticking out.....you keep your hand folded.....so if you stick your hand in one"s mouth...he only gets a knuckle and you don"t wind up with a crippled finger. Lots of fun, lots of beer and intestonal fortitude..."guts" We never hunted before May 30th so as to give them time to lay their eggs first.....Be a good sport and do the same.....unless they"re taking over and you really need to thin them out. Check the laws in your state and abide by them. Fred OH

The funnel type work best , and sit out with a rifle and scope and nail them as they sun there selves that is fun also.

thanks again for the responce from each one. maybe others have found this useful as well as i. we have close neighbors so the rifle solution is not viable here, i have in the past used this technique when living further out in the country. looks like we will be making some traps this coming week. have a good day.

My neighbor used to take old milk jugs and tie a heavy line and hook to them. Bait it with chicken. Works real well. But you MUST tie the jugs to a line from bank to bank or the turtle will drag the jugs to the bank and dig in. It was kind of a funny sight seeing the jugs moving about the pond.

If these are snappers keep your fingers clear. Those guys never let go.
