Hyd. Pump or Motor

On a previous posting, it is said that a hyd pump and a hyd. motor are the same thing?
If that person or anyone else who knows could answer the following question I would appreciate it. He seems to be saying that you can take two pumps and connect one to a tractor pto and another to an implement such as a auger or elevator and one will pump and the other will be pumped causing it to act like a motor and drive the implement. Thus there is no differance between the two pumps except the manner in which they are used. Is that correct?

In general, that's correct. Gear pumps and motors are nearly identical.

Some MOTORS have an internal passage from next to the shaft seal to the return line, to bleed off any pressure before it blows out the seal. (this only works for one specified rotation.

Some MOTORS that are designed to be reversed in use have two check balls and two passages to the pump ports, so ony oil pressure against the shaft seal will push against the check valves, one of which will open into the port with the lower pressure, to bleed pressure away from the seal.

Some MOTORS have a small third line, a bleed line back to the sump that will bleed any pressure against the seal back to the tank.

Some MOTORS are designed so the seals can take any pressure they're exposed to. ("Orbit" motors would be and example of that.)

So, often, the determining factor on whether a hydraulic pump will work as a motor is dependant upon how the shaft seal is set up.

Also in general hyd motors have the same size ports while hyd pumps have a larger inlet vs. the outlet. Billy
