Quincy 325 knocking--Roger P?

Got a chance to buy a Quincy 325 with a 5-hp motor and 80-gallon tank for $200. My neighbor is the one who located it (I haven"t seen it yet) and he said that when the tank gauge read about 25 lbs. of pressure the pump began making a knocking noise. The owner said that he didn"t know anything about the compressor--he bought the place to convert into a camp, and the compressor came with it--it used to be an auto shop many moons ago. Any idea on what this might be, and is it worth taking a chance on the compressor, or am I just buying a money pit?

SJewell..(nice last name BTW!), I have a Quincy model 310 that I am attemping to rebuild (it was given to me) and I've run into what seems to be a big problem and I sure could use the advice of someone who is familiar with Quincy. It seems that the oil pump failed, and I've been told that I cannot get parts for it. I've got all the necessary parts for rebuild (might still need a crank), and I really don't want to toss this unit just because of this one problem. Any help you could offer would be GREATLY appreciated..especially if you have a manual for this particular model. Thanks in advance for any help.

The 325 is a bullet-proof unit... one of the best Quincy made. It will pump up to 500 psi and like 34 cfm. I just rebuilt my 325 it had a bad bearing on the high pressure side. What ever you do DO NOT buy the rebuild "Kit" ($250.00), tear it down and only buy the parts you need. The kit contains rings and bearings and gaskets which you need, but it also has valves and valve springs(you might not need) o-rings and a new filter that you can buy at your local NAPA. The bearings come in different sizes(std, .030 under)be sure you know what ones you will need because they are $50.00 each set and are non-returnable. Drop me a line if you have any questions I have all the parts books and operators manual. PS. There are a couple of tricks you will need to know on how the get the rod caps off.

Actually, not quite--in looking for this compressor, my neighbor stumbled on another one. It"s also a Quincy--a 325-7, 1959 vintage from the tank tag. As of this evening, it"s setting in my garage. This one seems to run fine--the owner had recently had some repairs made and I got the rest of the un-used gaskets and some valve springs plus a spare filter thrown in. The wiring in the picture is just a quick jury-rig--I"ll be hard-wiring it up shortly once I move it into position. All in all, I think it"s $200 well spent! Shaun--I"ll e-mail you on your manual offer--hopefully this one won"t need major repairs soon, but I"d still like an owner"s manual so I can do the maintenance on it.

Nice looking machine, what hp is that motor? now you should tear it down and repaint it nice make it look nice and new for your shoppe.

It"s a 5-hp. I doubt if I"ll paint it--it would be the only thing in the shop that"s painted and it would probably feel lonely! On the other hand, I will clean it up a bit--it"s not in bad shape, but could use a bath as it wasn"t used much in the last few years. Fellow that had it inherited it from his dad, who bought it new. His dad used it to power his wood-working shop, which had a lot of air equipment, including an air planer (don"t see many of those!) Therefore it doesn"t have the usual collection of grease, grime, paint overspray, etc that"s common on compressors that came out of auto shops.

Sounds like a good deal to me, thats a quality built machien and well worth the money, even if you have to add some to fix the pump.

If your at all handy with tools don't even think about it. Get it! I did the same thing a couple of years ago. Mine was knocking really bad. It turned out to be the unloaders on mine. New unloaders and some other parts and I have a great machine. Prices are a bit high for parts but it's worth it. Others will tell you where to get good after market parts cheaper than OEM. Good luck.

If I were gonna take my chances on an old compressor it would be a Quincy. I paid too much for my basket case Quincy 17 years ago, but after some rather pricey repairs I now have a sweet running two stage compressor that will be running long after I'm gone. Glenn F.

Usually a bad HP wristpin bearing, but you won't know for sure till it's torn down. This bushing is readily pressed out and replaced.

The price is very good considering a 5 hp motor now sells for $300. The compressor can be rebuilt but parts and machine work is expensive...beware.
