I just bought a piece of used steel 36"x36"x3/8". Paid $.36 per pound. I didn't bother shopping around. What is used steel selling for in your area? Thanks, Glenn F.

Pretty good price. I manage a fab shop for a heavy equipment manufacturer. We cut 22 million lbs a year on our plasma"s & are now paying .42/lb. 1/4" to 1.5".

Couple guys want me to haul 22,000 lbs. of steel for them. Assorted sheets and general stuff for metal fab shop. When I asked how much they paid it was down around $.28 per pound on that quantity. They were quoted $2.25 per mile for a 150 mile delivery and I think I can do it and for $1.75 and come out OK.

Hi RJ,

I would just love to find where to buy steel at $.30/lb in AZ. I'm listening :-)

I just checked on some I-beam that was quoted at $.55/lb, angle at $.75/lb, plate at $.85/lb where two years ago I was paying $.50/lb no matter what the shape was. Pipe has really taken a huge jump here. All prices quoted for a 1000lb quanity.

If I could find $.30/lb steel I would buy 5000lbs for my future upcoming projects. Any suggestions?

T-Bone so far these guys are playing me and another two truckers off against each other to see who will haul it the cheapest. All they will tell me is it is in Phx around Washington and 22nd st. I think the one guy is getting a bunch of round tubing for Sand Rails. When I said I would take it out in some 3x3 sq tube and 1 1/2x3 rect they shut up real fast. One feller is ok but the other one is kinda shaky.Could be used iron as the one man used a lot of it last year on some R&D work.

Hi RJ,

There is a huge steel yard there, one of the majors, that would lets us buy there when steel times were tuff and not selling.

Now that the ecomony has picked up the bast*** won't talk with the little guy and wants you to buy thru there dealer network AGAIN.

Easy in and easy out warehouse tho. They could load 6 semi's "inside" there loading bay really easy.

T-Bone; Smith Pipe and Steel has a yard around 19th North of Buckeye Road and they have a minimum purchase. I got some 4x4 11ga sq tube and 4x6 rect tube from Muellers in Tx just before steel went way up.I had to wait for them to be delivering into the area and picked it up where they dropped off some steel building components.
Now you have to get a quote that is only good for 30 days.

T_Bone, those suppliers can get real arrogant at times... several years ago, I needed a 4 x4 foot piece of 3/16 thick aluminum..... I called a supplier a mile up the road. They said they had a $750.00 minimum !!! They must have more business than they can take care of.... I am waiting for the day their salesman calls on me.....

I guess I"m spoiled. We"ve got an outfit in Denver, DenCol Supply, that will sell you a 1" chunk of bar as long as you pay the cut charge. I think they"ve figured out there is a lot of business to be had from the little guy.

Hi Davis,

I really don't mind the minimum quanity buying as I have to agree it's a PITA to handle small orders but 5000lbs is really not all that small and no special cut sizes either. They would have to put the same order together if I bought direct or thru the supplier. Buying direct means less loading/unloading for me, a huge benefit too me as I would only have to handle the material once at my place.

The other really pet peive is the multiple pricing for different shapes of common shapes. I've never ran into this on common sizing of steel so it makes be wonder if my supplier is in the rip off mode as he's getting close too retirement and will probably close up shop when he retires as his land alone is worth more (several million) than the biz.

He states SS has doubled! That's $2.60/lb. I call BS on this one.

Hot rolled plate is current running 37 per pound or $740 per ton so it appears that you are right in the ballpark.
