I recently bought a hydraulic or air cylinder at an auction. It's new and has never been used. The problem is, I don't know if the cylinder is for air or hydraulic use. It measures 48" long and 2" in diameter. The rod is 1 1/2" in diameter. Does anyone have any idea how I can tell if it can be used with a hydraulic system or if it is designed for air? There is no tags or numbers on the cylinder, only the word, Prince.

Any ideas??

I have a recent Prince Manufacturing catalog. I found no 2" cylinders with 1-1/2" piston rods. Most of the 2" cylinders had only 1-1/8" rods though the fat rod is beneficial for the long stroke.

I found NO air cylinders in Prince either. Most of their stock cylinders have JIC fittings generally with a 3/4" diameter thread for the 2" diameter cylinders though I found some with a 3/8" pipe thread.

I'd say its hydraulic, possibly a displacement cylinder which is inherently single acting.

Some hydraulic cylinders have only 1/4 fittings depending only the application it was originall bought for. The best way is to look at how the housing is held together. A hydraulic will never have it held together by snap rings. The caps will either be bolted to the tube body or will have tie rods running the length holding the caps on, or the caps will be threaded on. The typical max pressure on an air system in 150 psi but will sometimes go up to 250 psi. Hydraulic system are made to run higher than that and snap rings would just blow apart under those pressures. There may be some stampings or cast numbers on the cap or on the body that you could cross refference to a Prince catalog. Based on the size you have I would say it is almost certainly hydraulic. It is very rare for an air system to be used on something that has a load that needs a 1-1/2" rod. Typically air cylinders have 1/4" or 1/2" rods.

I wouldn't call myself an expert on this topic, but I have taken 2 fluid power classes and covered both air and hydraulic systems.

Never say never. Some hyd. cylinders are held together with snap rings. We have about 50 of them at work. They are the lip cylinder on Kelly dock plates. The pressure relief is set at 1500 psi.

Since the rod is only slightly smaller in diameter than the piston, my guess would be that it is a hydraulic cylinder. Rods on pneumatic cylinders are usually much thinner because the loads are less than for hydraulics. The large forces on the outgoing stroke would cause the rod to buckle if the rod of a hydraulic cylinder were too thin. Just MHO.

Prince is a long time maker of hydraulic cylinders.
How is your cylinder put together? Tie rods or snap ring in the end of the barrel.
The ones I've seen by Prince have the front hydraulic fitting screwed into the front gland through the side of the tube if its a two way cylinder.

One sure way to tell is that the air cylinder is made out of Aluminum and the Hydraulic one is steel. (usually)

If it says Prince, & from the description, it must be hydraulic..... Most air cylinders have a label stating Max pressure.... I hate to admit it, but back in the 80's , I used lots of Bimba air cylinders for hydraulic applications. Oil pressure was only 4-500 PSI, but still more than they were designed for. They did not last long, but the tightwads I worked for did not want to pay for hydraulic cylinders. BTW, I am not endorsing the use of components beyond limits of their design..

I'm no expert on 'em, but what I've noticed is hydraulic cylinders will have pipe fittings 1/2" or bigger and air ones have small fittings about 1/4". How do you tell the difference between a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor? I bought one or the other at a yard sale, brand new for $10. Couldn't turn it down.

There is no diffrence between a hyd. motor and pump. They are one and the same. To make it a pump attach it to a electric motor or gas engine.
To make it a pump plumb it to a control valve.

Gotta laugh.

I worked for a company that had surplus sales all the time. About 35 years ago I bought a rt angle 15:1 reduction gear. Only wanted $5 for it. Whadda deal right? Wrong. Still haven't found a use for it. Grin.

Hi Bernie,,

Thanks for the information.. IF your assumption is correct this could very well be for air since the ports are 1/4". Either way it was so cheap I couldn't pass it up and I'm sure I will find a use for it someday.
