After eading some of the posts about recieving "books, tapes, and other items on a monthly basis, but no tools to test", I was puzzled! I have NEVER recieved anything from them that I didn't request. Every so often (couple times a year)I get a CARD in the mail telling about a certain tool they have for sale, but no "Columbia House" type deals. I've even got a discount at a couple of stores by showing my Handyman Club card. Hasn't been a scam to me!

I got that same orange envelope last week and after reading these stories I'm glad I pitched it in the trash.

I'm saying out right scam. I thought it woudl be good to get a FREE issue to see if the information in it was worth the money. I didnt really get anything valuable out of the magizine because it presented everythign in a slanted view of only showing the good. Then they sent me another issue and yet another then a letter saying i hadnt sent in the payment which i never agreed to pay. then i got a letter from a collection agencey and then yet another lattter about a month after that from handy man club offering me 2 years for 24 bucks or soemthing. Sorry but that really ticked me off but my opinion stay far away from them

BIL and I both belong. I've recieved several items to test (and keep). Tested everything from oil added to your car's windshield washer fluid that was an air freshner, all-in-one tool (like leatherman, 14.4 cordless drill, fancy doorbell, the imfamous "sanding sponge, cobalt drill bits, rachet wrench set, and 4-5 others. Neighbor tested a tree spade tansplanter. Not seen the "scam" part of it yet.

This was discussed just a few months ago here, so it's in the archives.

Anyway, I bit. It's an expensive scam. The first item sent for "testing" was a pencil. I kid you not, a pencil.

The expensive part was that it came packaged in a box containing a book that I told I had to buy in order to get the second item to test.

Yep, the monthly "you're buying this unless you send it back" game. Took quite a bit of fighting to get them to understand I sent it back (they didn't get it, etc).

Sounds just like the ol Columbia Records scam. Took my wife YEARS of fighting to get them to stop.

I joined Columbia and RCA for 8 track tapes when I was fourteen .What a disaster that was.

I was in it a couple years back, I did get a sanding sponge to test. You fill out a little form and then 6 months later see all the people listed saying "I like it" in the mag, never a bad note about a tool...

One of the most "powerful" persons to protect us is our postmaster.

If'n you don't like what you are gett'n in the US mail, tell 'em about it.

The "handyman" issue that you all are referring to is good and not-so-good.

The idea of "testing equipment is up to the manufacturer's responsibility".

Therefore, good reading is with no liability.

However, the plans that are published in the magazine are sent in to the magazine by hard working and "thinking" individuals that are promised some sorta renumeration. Question? Do they ever get paid? Ask the publishers thru your POASTMASTER.

Meantime, I, for one, like like the shop tips.

John,PA

I'm probably going to regret this, but I did get the letter and, against my better judgement, I signed up. The tool give away is obviously a scam, but the magazine looks decent.

I'll keep the postmaster trick in mind if things get out of hand...

My grandfather gets Handyman Club of America magazine. I read a few of them while I was visiting him last summer. It's not too bad of a mag. Don't know anything about testing tools though.

I belonged to that club for about three years. I never received anything to test. What I did receive was books and tapes that I had a hard time getting stopped. The only way I did get it stopped was to inlist the help of our post master. No matter what I wrote in letters or said on the phone the books and tapes just kept comming. I would write refused on the package and send it back and they would bill me and send duns. The post master returned one for me and it ended. He did not show or tell me what he said. He took the package at the post office window and said I will take care of it for you. Oh, I did receive afterward several nail aprons and flat pencils with a form to start all over again.
