Mig welding rotating parts

I'm trying to make a rotating weld positioner.
I have a shaft rotating in ball bearings at very low rpm. Mounted on the outboard end of the shaft is a plate. A pipe welding project is fastened to the plate. If I clamp the ground lead to the rotating shaft between the bearings and weld on the project, will any damage be done to the bearing(s) or 120v motor? The bearings are mounted on a common plate with the motor. What is the going price for a standard rotary ground clamp?

If you can attach a solid metal plate to the table of your rig. Next find a spring loaded brush holder from a large electric motor and make a "brush" out of a slab of brass. Mount the holder so it holds the brush in contact with the plate. Hook your ground lead to the brass brush using a short pigtail bolted to it and start welding. We've got an old Cincinatti lathe setup as a build up machine and this is the design we used for grounding the part being turned in the chuck and build up. I've had bottom rollers off of a crane on there building them up with .052 wire and pulling over 300 amps and never had a problem with the ground. Good luck.

I burned up a small u-joint on my motordriven positioner because I was grounded on the far side of it. A piece of bare fine-wire cable like welding cable hanging or wrapped loosely around the shaft that is turning works for me. I have a positioner I made out of a car frontend spindle and hub with the wheel attached. A piece of highway signpost with the holes an inch apart is welded to the wheel so I can bolt stuff to it. I reversed the brake action with levers so it releases when I step on the brake pedal. I turn whatever I'm welding by hand to where I want it and take my foot off the pedal. Contact is made thru a loop of cable rubbing against the back of the wheel. I've built everything from stoves to truck bumpers to carwash machine parts on it. By sliding smaller tube into the one welded to the wheel you can rig all kinds of jigs to build stuff on.

Your setup is heavy duty using the car spindle. What motor are you using? I'm using a 12 rpm ac gearbox motor and V belt drive. The original idea was to turn gas tanks for cleaning (I haven't yet), but since I am able to vary the speed, I thought it could be used as a welding positioner....The ground clamp hangs nicely on the 1/2" shaft and current will go thru the shaft to the outboard mounted disk, a used-up 12" diamond concrete blade. I find it good for grinding ends of pipe also. But I may have to change to a heaver shaft or go to your idea to rotate tanks filled with abrasive and liquid.

As long as the clampisn't bobbling around and you end up with a better elect. path through the bearings than throught the shaft. Remember; path of least resistance.
