What makes Loctite set up and work? The other night I put a few drops on my workbench. Today (2 days later)it is still blue liquid. I used the same loctite on some bolt threads. That loctite has already set up. Why the difference?

Yes, Loctite and other similar products are anaerobic--it sets up in the absence of air. Does make you wonder why it doesn't set up in the container though. Must be enough air in there.

Yup, they ship the botles half full so there is enough air. I purchased a 5 gallon pail of generic loctite at an auction and it also was 1/2 full. Looking for a supply of small bottles so I can sell the stuff at tractor shows. I don't think I will ever go thru 2 1/2 gallons!

Loctite and other products like it are known as anerobic sealents. Or they set up only from the lack of air as was posted. However it is not only a lack of air they require, it must be free of any oil or dirt to work properly. Thge use of the primer prior to using will greatly increase the setup time and strength.

The lack of air is what makes Loctite harden. Tip after using tap the bottle on your work bench and it will help keep the bottle tip from clogging
