I just bought a set of Craftsman metric nut drivers on Ebay to replace a stolen set. There are a number of sellers. I had to wait a couple of weeks to get the price I was looking for. Some time ago I bought a ratcheting box/open end set. I am pleased with both purchases.

The new Craftsman sockets which I have purchased at flea markets seem to have a poor quality chrome finish which is prone to rust if not kept clean, dry and oiled. I think these are reject sockets which haven't finished the plating process.

I asked a guy how he could sell new Craftsman tools so cheap and he said that Sears now wholesales tools to dealers.

Not too long ago, a guy here was busted selling new Craftsman tools, and some other brands at the swap meet. The Craftsman tools were stolen from their warehouse, and the other brands had been stolen from the Navy at Pearl Harbor. Just so happened that one of the Navy contractors was at the swap meet, and recognized his stuff. Naval Investigators raided the thief's home, and found a lot more stuff.Federal charges pending...

Hey Doc, when I was in Romeoville, IL, there's a huge flea market just north of I55, but won't mention the name. Never saw or been to a flea market until some scooter buddies took me in there a couple of times. You name the tools, and they could be found there for dirt cheap. Serious tools. I never bought any from there though. Figured all or most belonged to some trades guys who went out big bucks for them and were PO'd when they'd show up for work and their tools would be gone. Same with the old "Maxwell Street" right off the interstate on Chicago's south side. Had friends that used to go up to it and get the deals of the century for next to nothing. You know, set of 4 brand new L275x16x78 Michelin radial pickup tires for $100, stuff like that.

We were on a trip with another couple through Chicago about 20 years ago and we decided to stop at Maxwell Street. We parked on a busy main street and were gone about an hour. When we got back to my van, it was completely cleaned out, suitcases and all. I lost my tool box with a lot of nice tools that I was familiar with and could recognize the size of the tool at a glance. I still miss some of them especially a neat brake adjusting tool. When I called the cops they told us that we parked in their playground.

That would be Maxwell St. They closed it down a few years ago I remember reading, but it moved around the corner, I understand. When was a phone repairman in Cook County and downtown Chicago, had been by it, never stopped.

Sorry about your tools. That's why I never bought from that flea market either. Figured guys like yourself wouldn't be happy about tools you'd paid big $$$ for and collected over the years were putting $$$ in theive's pockets. I still talk to phone guys in Chicago, their trucks get broken into like the sun comes up.

In trying to double my tool set I bought lots of Craftsman tools on E-bay, take my advice, get a Craftsman tool catalog and price them before you buy. Some are no deals but page down and you will find the same set that is cheaper. Don't forget to add the shipping. A little care and you can save tons on craftsmans tools on e-bay.
