Removing paint from plastic help.

hey guys, Im restoring my 87 300zx, they plastic panels in the interior have been painted with black enamel, probly rust paint, the paint is flaking off in areas, I would like to redo them, perhaps with a paint that is ment for plastic, what would be the best way to remote all the old paint from the plastic?

You might try soaking a small section, perhaps on the back side of a piece, with brake fluid. It's death on most all paint. What you want to look for is does it absorb into the plastic and render it unpaintable. I don't think it will dissolve or craze the plastic, but your test should show that too.

A lot of plastics and vinals by that time had impigmented coloring embedded in the material itself. However, you say that what ever's on there now is flaking off, so has been painted on, as opposed to dyed or embedded, and I don't have an answer.

I'd talk to a paint supplier or auto-body guy on that one, especially since you're "restoring" it, and want it right. Besides, parts generally begin getting hard to get at the 10 year mark from the manufacturer. You don't want to waste, or ruin anything. Like the previous post said, too much heat can warp or distort plastics and vinals, and the wrong chemical can melt or disolve them.

If the paint is already flaking off try high pressure water. Start with a garden hose with a spray nozzle, then go with more pressure, like a car wash. I wouldn't use hot water as it may deform the plastic.
