Anybody know where there is a table that will have or allow you to calculate how much load a given size I beam can support?

A W6x8.5 or S5x10 beam will handle 2000 lb if you can stand some deflection (sag). The normal structual steel stress allowable is around 21000 psi. The span to depth ratio of the beam is acceptable.

Can't help much but I use a mobile home frame I beam in my shop for a support for my 3 ton hoist and it works well its on an 18 foot span and I can lift a 1 ton truck up as high as I need it

Look up the load limits in a machinery handbook or engineering statics and dynamics book.

If you can give me the supports of the beam you are looking at as well as the loading, I can pick a beam for you. With beams, the span length is probably the most critical variable.

I want to use oak 6x6s as my posts. I want a 14 foot span, half the garage. I want to be able to lift 2000 lb.

I will comment on the horizontal beam portion of the system. A 14 ft span with a 2000 lb load which can be at any point over the span with simple supports at each end - a W8x10 Steel I beam oriented with the I vertical would deflect about 1/4" and have a maximum stress of under 12000 psi with these conditions. You will need to check the yield strength of the material you are planning to use. I will not comment on the supports as there are many other factors at play here such as buckling, and side loading stability.

Sure, it's called engineering school. A Mark's Handbook will have all you need to do that, though, but you gotta be able to read and understand it. You will need to know the yield and ultimate strength of your steel, means of support at the ends of the beam (whether fixed or pinned), size of the beam, nature of the load, location of the load, distance between supports, and the size of the beam (actually, you'll probably be okay if you just know the moment of inertia and the height, if it's symmetrical.

If you are lifting something and you will be working underneath it, it better stay up. You need to know what the tables are telling you if you want to use them properly. Of course many structures have built without an engineer's help, but most have been built like a brick out house. Some have got by on a wing and a prayer. My structures prof told me he refused to go into a machine shed once. It was one of those ones that looks like a half a culvert laying on its side. The owner had bolted a hoist to a single bolt and was lifting an BIG engine with it. It was a wonder the hoist never tore out an came crashing to the ground.
