Saw an Atlas sell today at a consignment auction near Boyne Falls, MI, sell today for $160. Last one on e-buy sold for $510.

I don't think shapers are made any more. I think the last ones were made in the 50's or early 60's. My father used a Smith and Mills shaper and built fixtures for it - so he could gang up groups of parts. The Bridgeport mill probably killed off the shaper. Easy.

They usually go fairly cheaply, 200-300 dollars for an Atlas 7 inch. I have one put up for my hobby shop after I retire. The South Bend Shaper is a better, heavier machine than the Atlas is, but the SB name adds to the price. If you have the room & desire a bigger machine, the larger shapers often go for scrap price. a real shame that many get scrapped, you can cut a lot of steel with an inexpensive tool bit. I have seen nice large shapers at auctions, that never even got an opening bid. BTW, to anyone that runs a Metal Shaper... Please be careful, That ram moves mighty fast!!!! I never trusted the clutch, while setting up or measuring a workpiece, I always cut the motor off...

Yeah, and those chips come off there hot!!! We used to feel that if you weren't getting blue chips, you weren't cutting enough. Easy.

Ebay, local classified adds, etc. There are machinery dealers on-line, do a google search. There are also on-line web sites catering to shapers, small lathes etc. I have an Atlas I"m learing to use.
