What do you pay for small quanities of welding rods? Yesterday I needed some rods, was running out, so on the way home from work I stopped at the local shop and bought 10# of 1/8 6013 and 10 # of 1/8 7018. Cost total was $64.96. Haven't bought any for a while, but that seemed high. The actual cost of the rods was 29.06 for the 6013, and 28.97 for the 7018. There was a l.25 "hazardous material charge" and then tax. Hazardous matereal??? What's this??

Haz Mat on rods is manganese and other potentially toxic metals. Right now a bunch of litigation going on of manganese induced Parkinsons disease. Seems that some of the companies that make rods covered it up back in the 30's that there were health effects associated with manganese exposure. I thought it was a bunch of bull but had to get tested and monitored at work, sure enough, my hair samples came back with elevated manganese, nickel, and cadmium for Dec, Jan, Feb.

As far as prices, I had been paying $69.00 a box for common stuff (its a little on the high side but I like the dealer). Last order (last week, of new stock) was $205 for 100# of 6011's. Then the better news, $217 for 10# of 99% nickel.

I bought E6011 in two different diameters just last week at Tractor Supply. Normal price, no hazmat cost and they came in a plastic storage box which should help prevent moisture problems in the flux.

I just finished using a certain size of rods from 1965 that were always stored in the cardboard box. No moisture problem until moving from western Kansas to south central Kansas. WK was drier and rods simply don't draw the dampness as they do here.

From Tractor Supply Company current catalog: 10 pounds 1/8th" 6013=$14.98, 10 pounds 1/8th" 7018=$16.33 + tax.

I made a mistake. The Hazmat charge was $3.25, not 1/25 as I had said. Anyway, thanks for all the responses. I guess I didn't get too over charged for the lbs I purchased. I think I will ask about the Hasmat charge though. Thanks again guys.

If you buy fifty lbs. at a time and are without a rod oven some of it may get tossed anyhow. If you buy a rod oven your now using electricity to store your rod.Not sure which is cheaper to do.

Unless you are trying for Xray quality welds which most of us couldn't make anyway, a rod oven is nice but kind of a waste I think. I've had boxes of 7018 sitting on my shelf for years and never had anything break because of moisture/porosity. Think about it: after you have burned off the first inch of that rod the rest of it is already much hotter than a rod oven keeps it.
If I know I am going do a lot of welding I might throw a few pounds into the oven in the kitchen stove for an hour or two. I was certified years ago with Lo Hy and can still make some pretty beads/welds. But there is no way I could weld well enough anymore that a little moisture will make much difference.

Hi Ultradog,

I have to disagree with your assement of 7018. I don't think you can get any dryer than Arizona, typically under 25%rh average, and I still can have a moister problem with 7018, 7014, and 7024 as those electrodes attract moister. This year were running above our average RH and I had to resort to using a rod oven for my 7018.

Although your electrode will heat above 212, you can not drive off the moister content out of the flux in that amount of "time" while welding. It takes about 2hrs minimum at 250 to lower the moister content to an aceptable level in 7018.

Yesterday I bought 10 pounds of Forney 6011's for $13.99 + tax. They had Forney 6013's at 10 pounds for $12.99. Also an off brand of 7014's for $9.99 for 10 pounds. Regular prices, not a sale. At a West Central Illinois Farm King store.

Hi Tom,

Not really high in small quanity's. $3/lb is not uncommon. 50# usually sells for about $50.

Have you filled a Acetylene cylinder lately? About $10 haz mat fee on top of the gas price. I was told the electrode Haz fee was Federal mandated for heavy metals in the slag. And how does that work?

One placed I complained, they added the haz fee on the price and when I returned a part that didn't fit, the Haz fee was hand written on the store copy but not on my copy.

Looks like they get it one way or the other.

At our local hardware store, $2.25 per pound. You go to a big box of rods and pick up the amount you want. No hazard material charge, just tax.

Haz Mat fee is a scam, I think... I get it on bills from welding supply places. I scratch it out & pay amount of merchandise only on invoices... Never had them complain.. If it was going to the state or Feds, I think they would enforce paying it. I have a hard enough time getting my customers to pay for Time & materials, so why should I pay a bogus fee???? BTW, I pay all my bills in 30 days. 8^)

It makes me wonder about price gouging.I recently needed some 1/16 " 6010 electrode for use on thin material.Only required a small amount. The local supply house was out of stock soI had to go to Tractor Supply Co.They had what I needed, just two pounds.I have not yet recovered from sticker shock. It cost $5.26 per pound. That comes to $263.oo for 50 pounds.I readily recall buying this rod in 1965 at $10.00 for 50 pounds.I am aware of inflation and the falling dollar, but what makes sense about this outrage. How much can packaging cost. This reminds me of todays shipping and handling charge scam ,where it costs $8.75 to place an item in an envelope and mail it with only a $ 1.15 postal cost.
