Can regular chrome 12 point sockets be safely used on a 3/8" cordless impact, or should I spring for a set of impact sockets?

What kind of cordless impact are you using? If it is a strong 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive and you use it alot, I would opt for impact sockets. In addition to not shattering like chrome sockets, impact sockets are easier on your impact wrench too. The impact sockets absorb some of the shock of the impact wrench whereas chrome sockets are more britle and are harder on your impact wrench's anvil. For longer impact wrench life I would use decent quality impact sockets.

Hi Jim,

Impact guns will even wear out the impact sockets, depending on how much use they get.

I used to wear out a set of Snap-On's impacts every year when I worked automatic trannys.

Impact sockets won"t shatter when they break like regular ones do but I use them sometimes when I need an odd size that I don"t have in the impacts. You should get a set of impacts if you plan on using the gun a lot. I bought mine from one of those Homier tent sale events that rolls into town every year. Quality isn"t exactly tops but for what I use them for it"s good enough. Couldn"t beat the price either.

Normally it just wears them out very quickly. You can often times see this abuse in old sockets by how wallered out the square hole is.

I would do it without fear as a necessity, but not as a practice.

get the impact sockets, crome ones have been known to statter and they dangerous. Very Dangerous, get IMPACT SOCKETS

I'm guilty of abusing sockets with impact guns. Haven't broken a socket in forty years. But then, I also swear by Metwrinch tools so I'm probrably considered to be weird.

I have a set of JET impact sockets, imported of course, but I THOUGHT better and some import stuff.

A couple of them have broken, shattered like glass. I try to be carefull when using them, I guess I'd better toss them and buy a new set of GOOD impact sockets.

I bought a set of deep metric impacts from Harbor Freight. Major mistake! Every one I've tried to use on something that really needed an impact wrench has split in short order, one of them on the first hit with my Harbor Freight impact wrench. Sockets are not a good place to go cheap.
