Recently purchased a 30' leather belt. How is the best way to store it.

First thing I'd do is give that belt a good oiling with neatsfoot oil. I buy it by the jug (8 or 9 dollars/qt.) at the local feeds-and-needs store, near the horse supplies.

Oil the belt a couple of times, hanging it up indoors to dry in between applications (I do mine in the cellar) and then roll it up and store it in a cardboard box. (I put some newspapers in the bottom of the box and wrap them in a layer of plastic wrap so they don't soak the oil out of the belts.) Be sure to keep the box in a dry, well-ventilated place, because dampness will cause a belt to mildew.

Depending on how often you use it, you'll probably want to re-oil the belt before storing it again. I've found that using a belt for only a couple of hours seems to open up the pores in the leather, and it takes another dose of oil readily. Keeps it nice and supple, too.
