SA 200 lincoln welder will not arc

I have a sa 200 that has not been used in about 5 years was welding fine when it was parked.I talked to a man one time that had the same probblem he said when his had been parked for a long time he had to repolerize his.I can not remember how he told me he did it. I do know he used a battery and hook it to some point of the generator for a few seconds and the more he welded with it the better it worked.Does anyone know this trick.Thanks for any advice.

I havea sa 200 with the same problem, brushes are fine, they move, not rusted to the holders, cleaned the armature up with a armature stone, would like to try this one thing next..anyone know how to do this?

It's real easy to flash the exciter on a sa 200. Take the exciter cover off the end of the machine and first check to make sure no wires are broken or the exciter brushes aren't stuck. To flash the fields: with the welder off, raise one exciter brush off the commutator. using a 12 volt battery attach the positive side to the right brushholder.now carefully touch the negetive from the battery to the left brushholder for 5 seconds and remove. remove the positive from the other brushholder and replace the brush on the commutator and start the machine. have a grinder plugged in and try it as soon as you can, if you have power to the plug it should weld. if there is still no power do this. "CAREFULLY," with the machine running, take the negetive and positive from the battery and hold them against the same brushholders for a few seconds, remove and try the grinder again, this should do it. Let me know how you make out. good luck

go to www.weldmart.com this site has a lot of help on it..they sent me a cd with parts and up grade on it ..also had manuals on it....mine quit one time and a rat had got in it eaten wire..repaired wire and it worked...i have 2 one a 1948 and one 1971 have nice day may god bless

Before you hook up any power source to the leads you better check the brushes and make sure they aren"t frozen to their holders.rust will build up between the brushes and the steel holders.

Brushes are fine on it.And the holders are clean and bright look almost new.

Have you checked both sets? One set of brushes or slip rings under dome cap at end and another set under gas tank.If you still have problems I'll find out how to energize the windings.

ChasNY, please find out if you could. I check both sets of brushes, everything moves freely, armature is clean, When I try to strike an arc, I'll have a tiny blue spark but nothing more, not enough to weld. Thanks!
