OT: price of gravel?

Last week my neighbor called me and said "hey I know a guy that will sell us 21aa agregrate driveway gravel for $600 for a train load", I paid $900 for 50-60 yds. This about $15-18/yrd. I got a good deal on this, but what is driveway gravel going for in your area? I know that other places in my area want $27/yd for driveway gravel. I live in Michigan.

$30 to $40 a yard for driveway limestone. about 20 for pea gravel in South Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico. We don't have any rocks. It comes in by barge down the Mississippi river.

paid $5 a yard last summer and called yesterday because i need some more and it"s still $5 a yard. i"m in east-central SD.

Wow, you fellas are getting good deals on gravel. I have never heard of anything as low as $12/yrd. in recent times, or the last 8 years.

I bought gravel for years - did my own driveways. Then I hired a local guy who used a backhoe to dig out a soft spot, filled it in with sand, layed down 30 yds of gravel - #21, and compacted it with a bulldozer. For $600. Turns out he can buy the gravel for less than half of my cost. Hard to beat a man at his own trade. Sometimes the most efficent thing I can do is write a check. Easy.

Did the bulldozer pull a compactor or did you just not want it real compacted? Most dozers only put down 10-20psi. Thats why tracked vehicles are useful their downpressure is spread out.

Dad and I had trouble one time on a pond we'd built where the dam wouldn't hold good until we pulled a roller behind the bulldozer. Had to haul more fill the stinking dam compacted so much.

He had a roller - about 8 ft wide, concrete filled. I don't know what it weighed, but seemed to work well. Where in Michigan are you? Livingston county here. Easy.

A roller is the way to go for compaction. I've seen many roads that were "compacted" with dozer wash away in the first good rain. Compaction is very important and often overlooked in roadbuilding. If it were my road or driveway I'd use a sheepsfoot vibrating roller.

Actually I'm in MA, haven't made it to Michigan yet. Although when I was in Indiana 2 weeks ago my rental car had Michigan plates.

Mid,

I was down at the local pit on monday and picked up his price list. 12 yard loads delivered (about 5 miles) is $25.00.

I usually get a load of 3/4-, topsoil and sand every spring for my place. for specifics, you can figure out the load price from the pic.

Maybe is is Just Ohio, but we get charged by the ton....in central Ohio, #411 or #304 is approx $7.oo per ton...about 1.5 - 2 tons per yards - so approx $12-$14 per yard?

I just did a parking area for a friends shuttle vans to park on, after excavating the soft fill, I brought in R.O.B. gravel at $7.75/ yd. delivered. Real boney material, but just right for this job, hit water, it could have turned out a real mess if someone did this job that did not have some experience, I had to raise the elevation, get out of the water, install a quick and dirty drain area with perforated pipe, #2 stone, pipe daylighted to a creek to relieve the water if it builds up underneath. 3 areas began to pump, so I had to re-dig them out, get rid of more spoil, filled with broken concrete and rubble, then mixed crusher run with the boney gravel on top of the rubble, it finally tightened up. Rambling here, but # 2 stone ( round/screened not crushed ) was $13.50/yd, delivered, crusher run gravel (which is stone and stone dust), the state calls their approved variant of this Item # 4 is 11.00 ton delivered, there must be some difference in the sieve analysis,but it is almost identical to what they use under asphalt paving.

Screened gravel is 9.75/ yd, from my supplier, what helps is he's a friend, our fathers are good friends. I still shop and negotiate him though, but he's a pleasure to deal with, so my business will stay with them. This is in Troy, N.Y.

In my area the lake of the ozarks Missouri dirty base runs around $150 per load which is a 12 yd truck load.

In cent ILL we get recycled concrete for 6.50 per ton + about 4.00 per ton delivered this is just as good as rock and it packs down nice.

I just had 70 yds of 1 1/2" crushed gravel delivered this morning for new parking lot by shop. $12 yard. Usually most places here get $14 a yd. This guy delivered all 5 loads at once.

Where are you in Maine? Around my farm in Caribou that'd be about right, we can get crushed slate there which mades for excellent driveways. My parents live outside Portland and I suspect good gravel there which is still mostly sand, would be closer to $20 a yard.

I bought my 1 1/2" crushed gravel from Portland Sand and Gravel in New Gloucester,Me. They always deliver the day you call or the next. When we ordered gravel for the driveway, they had 12 trucks lined up out front at 7 AM, they sure have good service

I work in a Quarry in central pa and we sell by the ton. Pa state approved 2A (crusher run) is around 7.00/ton and weighs around 1.5 tons/yard. Clean #57 (1.5") crushed stone is aronud $8.50/ton and weighs about 1 ton/yard. crushed sand (screenings, dust or whatever it is called in your area) is cheap, 3.50/ton, and is about 1.5 tons/yard. Big rock (rip-rap) is usualy bid per job/amount and goes for around 12.00/ton. We have shot and crushed hard sand stone, but most pits in our area are crushed limestone. These prices are picked up in our yard. Delivery is charged by distance hauled.

quick note: here we are a little over a year later. prices in north carolina have jumped from $130/15 ton load($8.66/ton),(#57 washed stone), to $352/15 ton load($23.50/ton) !!! this doesn't even include the fuel surcharge.
