Hey y'all,
I did not know where else to post this. I was wonderin if y'all good people might have some wisdom to this. I have heard the older people talk about the moon not right or this an that, but what the H*II is the scoop with diggin a big hole, filling it near d@^^ full of concrete rip rap, block or whatever and put all the dirt back in and still needing some more. I would think you would have a lot of dirt left over. Diggin it all up, you would think it was fluffy and have more than enough for a hole if you just turned around and filled it back in, let alone puttin a bunch of other stuff in it in addition to the dirt. Hope I make sense.

Hrer is what happend to me....I was about 54 years ago,I was about 14....Dad sent me back to mow alfalfa hay...about half way around the field --- I was cutting up next to the fence ...I cought the mower on a fence post...diden't get stopped in time....bent the mower..... back too the barn....old time neibor was ther....he said I was cutting wrong time of moon....the hay would turn to grass....guess what the next year we had 7 ft. of grass next to fence...you could even see the post I hit.....my 2 cents

i believe that a lot of the dirt just simply "disapears." or gets spread out around the area that your working in. back when i was workin on my neighbors farm replaced a lot of fence posts. and like all you have experienced, sometimes had dirt left over, sometimes didnt. so i started taking a wheelbarrow along with me which worked out fine cause i could carry all the fencing tools in it and use it to hold the dirt that was dug out. never had a problem after that. all the posts had a nice compacted mound around them and often times had a lot of dirt left over. now some things do seem to be influenced by the phase of the moon, but i would say it dont affect diging and filling holes at all.

When I was a youngun, I thought all the stuff about the moon was malarky. Over the many years I have found out a lot of it is true. All the way from settling dirt to fence posts coming out of the ground.

I once read an article in a book about the amount of dirt it takes to fill a grave. All the old folks they interviewed said it depended on the sign of the moon..... Sometimes they hauled dirt off, sometimes they had to bring in more.

Never understood; always assumed it had to do with moisture content of soil; digging fence post holes..... .... sometimes you have soil left over; sometimes you don't have enough..... ...after setting post.

We buy our fence posts in a package deal where they come with their own holes. All we have to do then is take the dirt out of the holes and put the posts in. If you don't have enough dirt to fill in when the post is in, you didn't get all the dirt out of the hole. If you have excess, you took too much out. Simple, right?

Cutting your own posts would be a great way to do it, however, trees are pretty scarce here in the Sandhills of Nebraska. All the trees we have were planted on purpose for use as shelterbelts, so we don't tend to go around cuttin' em down.
