any tips on how to use a ammeter on a 220 volt circut, do I clamp on to both hot wires or just one.

Depends on the loads. Pure 240 volt loads you want to clamp on only one because the load current returns in the other. Clamping on both will give you zero reading because of equal currents in opposite directions.

Pure 120 volt loads you read one line at a time but their return currents are in the neutral and opposite directions. The two line currents should be different.

If you're referring to a clamp-on ammeter test instrument, you enclose ONE leg of the 220 volt circuit in the clamp at a time. Doing both will cancel each other out, and the meter will read "0".

If it is strictly a 220 Volt circuit, with no neutral, and therefore no 110 Volt loads on one leg or the other, the amperage reading will be the same in both "legs", when check individually.
