Air compressor wiring

I bought a new air compressor. Its a 60 gallon upright. It says 220 volt on it. The instructions say it can be wired 110 volt or 220 volt but do not go into any further detail on which wires to hook up to which terminal. There is a plate on the motor that is removed and a cord would be wired in there. I already have a 220 cord from a different compressor. There is a bunch of terminals in there and the cord from the motor to the valve is wired in there -white & black wires. I want to wire it 220, but I don't want to fry anything. Any suggestions on how to hook this thing up?

A new compressor should have a wiring diagram, at least I would think so. If I were to guess I would think that there would be two hot wires, red and black and one white wire, this would be the neutral and one chassis ground which would be green. GOod Luck.

There should be a diagram somewhere on the motor or inside a removable plate.
Standard wiring for 220 is L1 (one of the hot wires)to T4 and a black wire for CW rotation and L2 (the other hot wire) to T1. T2 & T3 and a red wire should be wired together. For CCW rotation, swap the red and black wires. The red and black wires are sometimes labelled 5 & 8 and could be other colors, but I don't remember which number goes with the standard color. The third wire in your power cord should be green and attached to ground - the body of your motor. The ground wire should go to ground, not neutral.
