O.T. dumping trailer

Sometimes I am in need of a dumping trailer to pull behind my pickup. I see old grain trucks that don't run and have thought about converting one to a trailer, either gooseneck or bumper pull. Is there a good way to actuate the hydraulic brakes on the truck axle?
Also I would need a hydraulic power supply to run the hoist. I know someone that uses a small engine driven hydraulic pump on a smaller trailer. Any better ideas? Cost and safety are both concerns.

You can get a surge brake master cylinder/hitch assembly for about $140 from Champion trailer. Surge brakes work quite well in my experiences with them. They only provide enough braking to neutralize the trailer, you don't get any sort of added braking. You've got to manually lock them out to back up most of the time. The master cylinder will come with the lockout lever. You can sometimes backup against the spring if it's a gentle reversing.

There is an expensive electrical controller for hydraulic brakes. Costs something like $700. I wouldn't bother. For less money you could convert to electro magnetic brakes.

For hydraulic actuation of the tilting, I'd be inclined to go with a 12 volt pump. You could either carry a battery in the trailer, or put a power source plug at the back of the truck. Heck, do both. Good powerful 12volt pumps aren't very expensive through Granger and the like.

We had a "factory" one in the '80s; made by Howle. Used vacuum/hydraulic brakes (master cylinder on trailer) and hydraulic hoist which was operated by a small pump connected to and driven by a 12V starter. It was a gooseneck and would hold 400 bu of grain, 'though we seldom loaded it that heavily, since we were pulling it with a one-ton Dodge with 4-speed and VERY low speed rear end. I made one of the pump units (for some project I had in mind and never completed) using a pump salvaged from a combine and a spare starter. Quite simple to make; I never used it; it's on a shelf somewhere in the shop; if I can dig it out, I'll post a picture..... ..

Thanks for the idea- I'm looking for a way to power a dump box on a one ton Ford with AT. Have severeal Gleaner pump systems and a couple good starters from Cummins 855. The coupler you mention is sometimes called a 'Lovejoy'.

We made a trailer out of school bus axle at work a few years ago. Used a surge hitch unit on pintle hook. Works OK but you have to lock it out to back up. Eventually they put on a valve to hydraulically turn em off. Not sure how much braking you really get from a surge hitch but I think they are still legal.

Roy,

As an alternative to the gas engine and pump, think about a snowplow power unit. If you can find one with a big enough tank, you are in business with minimal hassle.
