Painting aluminum

I have an old aluminum canoe that i want to paint. Previous attempts at painting aluminum have not gone well, it seems like after a while the paint just peels off. What do i need to do to make the paint stick? I plan on roughing the surface either by sanding or using a scotch-brite pad. Thanks for any tips or advice.

You need a special chromated primer for aluminum boats. You should be able to buy it where you are buying your finish coat paint.

This paint sears sell you need no prep just slap it on they say you can paint over dirt or even loose paint this stuff sticks good aluminun been on my john boat for 4 years now.

All the folks are on the right track here. Roughen the surface to give it some "tooth" and the paint will have a better chance of sticking. I like the vinegar approach to etch it a little. I have never tried this but I have significant experience with both powder and wet-coating of aluminum castings and the two most effective ways of getting the surface prepped are blasting and etching. Automotive parts that have salt-spray requirements will often get an alodine dip before final coating. Your scotch-brite plan would also work as well. Aircraft parts get a zinc-chromate primer coat first. That may be an additional aid.

To paint bare metal, I use etching primer (spray it on). Never failed me yet. Good Luck.

Go to sears they have a house paint called I belive dura bond I used this to paint my john boat and it stuck really well and they can mix flat camo colors if thats what you want or any other color about 22.00 per gal

never pained an alum boat, but about 4 years ago I painted some weathered alum flashing around my bluebird house pole to keep cats off. It was an exterior latex from Sher. williams. Still there.

when painting aluminum I always wipe it down with vineger first. The acid etches aluminum just enough so the paint sticks to it. I never had a problem with paint coming off.
