Hi Just wondering how much air a person can put in a pressure tank. What im trying to do is raise my pressure on my well?My cut of for the pressure is 20 40 can i get 40 psi of water pressure with this or do i haveto get a 30 50 pressure switch. There is no pressure guage on the pressure switch, can i put one on that line to see where it cut off and on.

Changing the air pressure in the tank will not effect the water pressure. It will effect draw down or how many gallons of water you can use before the pump comes on again. Is the tank a captive air tank ( has a bladder in it)? If so it should be set to one pound less than the cut on pressure of the switch with no water in the tank. I would definitely put a pressure gauge in the line so you can see what is happening with the system. As others have mentioned you can tweak the switch to get a bit more water pressure, dont forget to change the tank pressure as well. I have also wired a light to my switch that is on when the pump is running. Can see it from my favorite chair in the den. If I see it coming on too frequently or late at night when no water is being used I know I have a problem somewhere in the system. By the way my well supplies three houses and two barns. Lots of buried pipe and some of it is still galvinized that was put there before I was born. Im about to turn 48.

All the pressure switches I have see use one adjustment to raise or lower the on and off pressure and the other is for different pressure between on and off, usualy off to the side of the main adjustment. Usualy there are instructions inside the cover.

Your switch should be adjustable for pressure. If you adjust the switch then the tank pressure should be adjusted as well. If your switch is like mine, when you take off the cover you will see two adjusting nuts. One changes the low pressure cut-in setting, while the other changes the high pressure cut-off. You can figure out which is which just by observing what they do as the pump cycles.

As for the pressure in the tank, when the tank is empty of water it needs to be pressurized to a few psi less than the low pressure cut-in setting of the switch. If it's set to more than the cut-in, then you'll run out of water before the pump turns on. If it's set too low, you'll be wasting tank capacity.

This is for a submersible pump. If you have a jet pump, you probably have a mechanism that adds a little air to the tank each cycle.

You can add the guage, good idea.

Adding air will accomplish nothing for what you want, will only change the air/ water ration in the tank.

If you need min 30 psi, you need to go to the 30/50 switch. If you need a min of 40, then think through the kind of max pressure you will be getting, this can be a bad thing for valves & leaks & such.....

Some switches can be tweaked a bit, could get your 20/40 set to 25/40 maybe....
