load testing a generater

I was given a 4400 watt and the engine needs work. Is there a way to load test it before I put any money into it?

Let's see, 4400 Watts equals out to a little over 36 amps at 120 volts. So basically all you need to do is find yourself a combination of loads that total up to nearly that much. You could do it with a "motor" load and a resistive load or any combination. Just remember a motor is gonna draw higher startup amps than the running load so if you use a motor start it first then add the other loads til you max it out. The easiest thing do do though would be to get a couple of hair dryers. A 1500 Watt isn't all that big of a dryer, and it's a common size. So with two of them you are gonna put a 3000 watt resistive load on it...add a third of the same size and your overloaded but if it at least pulls it for a minute or so then you know the generator is good to it's rated max and then some. Just remember also to check the data plate. Many generators are named/rated at their maximum intermittent/peak load and not the maximum sustained load to make them sound larger than they actually are. If yours is rated at 4400 intermittent them it should carry more load for a short amount of time (like I suggested for the test) but it isn't gonna handle that load full time without burning it up. I've seen the home made test stand one of our local generator repair shops has made up and although it's a little more complex in it's design it uses the same principle I've suggested with the resistive loads applied with the hair dryers. They've used it for years and say it works great. Hope this helps.
