Battery in Portable Welder?

The battery that came in the portable welder is no longer holding a charge [4-5+ years old]. Any thoughts or preferences on the kind or brand of a replacement battery?? Have usually used Cat batteries for most replacements in the past. These portable welders seem to be hard on batteries anyway - the way they will sit for periods of time - before they're needed.

Thanks

If your talking about a welder on a trailer this is what I did. I ran a 1/0 cable all the way back to my bumper from the battery of my truck and a short ground from the frame to a big heavy duty plug/receiver. Then on the welder I ran cables from the battery with the same style plug just long enough to be accesable, then made up a short jumper cable with matching ends. Get to a job site and have dead battery I just whip out the cable. Having the recepticle on the back has come in handy for other things as well. Like a winch on my hauling trailer and hooking up to my fifth wheel travel trailer when that battery lets me down. If your talking about the little lawn mower type, I have one of those rechargeable booster batterries with the 12" leads made for jump starting. I think it beats buying those batteries all the time.

I have a Hobart, and when the special size batteries conked, I went to Wal_Mart and bought the thinest car batteries that they had. It's been 2yrs. now and no problems. I saved $43 on the pair. I just had a problem remebering where the cables went on the 24V system; oldtimers mind yaknow.

Hi MR, I have real good luck with marine starting battery's. I was eating battery a year in my service truck and went to these and I got 3yrs on the average. I always used alot of 12v drill, flashlite etc, battery's and thats what was eating mine. Brand wise it didn't seam to matter as I tried Exide and Interstate.

If you got 4 of 5 years out of the old battery, you did good. What kind of battery is it? A year is about the most you can expect from these little batteries, especially if they're not used much.
Exide or Interstate would be my choices for replacement.

With the age of this battery, I didn't expect it owed us anything. :] It is a Deka 40, which is a brand I've never seen before. Also not so small - group 24, plenty big enough to crank an 18 hp onan in a hobart.

I use Deka batteries in all my farm equipment. My 8+ years of experience with them has been similiar to yours. I always buy the largest amp and the heaviest battery that will fit in the battery box. Deka seems to be reputable with their amp ratings, not lying like many of the others. My costs for 1130 amp tractor/equipment batteries are approximately $70. I sometimes go 4 or 5 months between starting a piece of equipment and if the battery is not over 4 years old I expect the machine to start. I get the batteries through a starter/alternator rebuilder. A heavy equipment company owner put me onto using these batteries and at this time I have no reason to change brands.

My mistake. I was thinking about the type of battery that's used in garden tractors etc. I'm familiar with the Deka brand. They make a lot of battery accessories. (cables, terminals, brackets) I didn't know they had their own line of batteries too. It shouldn't be hard to find a good group 24 battery at a reasonable price.
