I just got to work 4pm. it took me 2 hrs to get here (normally 45 minute ride), but im glad i made it. It ran good for the first half hour then when the truck heats up i lose power, feels like the gas is shut off. i can pump the gas pedal and make it go to about 25 mph. then pull over go again then die out again. no passing gear power and it never stalls out completly but surges at idle. no problem starting up, even when hot. please help, its gonna be a long ride home at 11pm tonight.

Had a 1984 F150 V8 - did the same thing - replaced mechanical fuel pump and fuel filter at the carb and it ran fine after that. It had
175,000 miles on it at the time.

Does it make any difference whether the tank is full or near empty? Has this come on suddenly or gotten worse over time? How many miles on the truck? Trying to help...

Mark: I have not driven a ford for many years. But does it have a mech pump? Arm type or plunger type?
Reason asking is I had a chevy in like 84, had basically the same problem when hot. Finally found the fuel pump. Had a plunger type pump that ran off the cam. The return spring had broken and there fore it did not get a full stroke on the return. Only acted up when engine got hot. Might check if applicable.

About all possibilities have been covered. If everything else fails, look for either a crushed metal fuel line, clogged fuel intake screen in fuel tank or a clogged fuel line.

Just thought of one more thing -- Look for a leaking vacuum line.

Had the same problem on a 300 6 a few years ago. Found inline fuel filter clogged and the short fuel line hose on the filter collasped. Can't remember if fuel filter screwed in the carb or if connected by two short sections of hose. No problem to replace as it is on top of engine next to carb. Danny Hearl

Water in the fuel may have plugged the fuel filter.

Fuel pump may be going out.

Fuel pressure regulator may be going bad. I had one leak gobs of fuel to the vacuum lines that filled the cylinders and crankcase with gasoline. That was hard on that engine. It was fuel injected.

If not fuel injected, it may be that the tank vent is plugged. Pull the gas cap to see if it runs better.

If it's an older truck,(before fuel injection), the most likely culprit is the in-line fuel filter, right on the carburetor. If the truck is newer than that, I'm lost.

Thanks for all the replys. I punched a hole through the Fuel Filter connected to the Carb (it also still has an inline filter) Im gonna try to make it home. If all else fails I just take a nap when the going gets bad and let it cool down then continue on home. Thanks again for all the advice!

try throwing some methel hydrate in your tank ,let it set a couple of hours until you head home, if any water in your gas it should help by then, then like all the others have said, look for the simpler things and work your way up.

you know you could be right, i try and stay away from fords as much as possible(but did just buy the wife a explorer) but i had i think it was a 79 f250 years ago that did that and it was that module, a black box about 4x4 i think, same type of acting up , this one would buck like someone was pulling it with the clutch out also, hard to say without looking at them and finding your way along though.
