Anybody have plans or ideas? Would like to build one that's large enough to put a tractor hood or gas tank into, maybe even an engine block? Sheet metal is very hard to find around here, so I plan on the actual cabinet being made of plywood. The frame would be steel for strength, but I need a sort of hopper in the bottom for easy clean out. Any ideas?

On my 1/2" plywood cabinet, I've used the rear window from a small camper shell, about 42-46" long x 12" hi. Side glass will work too. Old fireplace glass doors might be good. Depends on the cabinet size you want. Look for metal framed square corner stuff so sealing is easier. For a large cabinet, consider two sets of glove holes, so you can reach anywhere inside. I have a right hand side door. Old bed rails are good supports for the expanded wire floor, but don't try to weld them. Fasten them to the frame with the outside facing up so the sand runs off. Old washers and dryers have some nice steel sides that can be removed and used on the inside of a blasting cabinet. I'm not finished with mine, so I haven't used it yet.

I saw a nice professionally built one made from a home fuel-oil tank with a hinged lift door.

I got lucky and found a large cabinet military surplus. Check with your local surplus buyers for something. I've seen large cabinets made from old combine bins or large tanks too. You can make a trap door with spring and rubber gasket on bottom. For a better suction tube you can look at the TP one and make one like it from 1/2" electrical conduit and use clear acrylic hose to feed your gun. I just get a cheap shop vac to use on mine until the motor is wore out. Change the filters often or can double them too. I have seen guys clamp or wire the gloves to coffee cans too.

If you have access to rubber sheeting, you can fasten that inside and it will greatly extend the life of the wood/cardboard that you use for the cabinet.

Thanks guys, you"ve given me some good ideas. I"ve already got the craftsman siphon feed gun and a bunch of large cardboard boxes. I"m the kind of guy that never throws anything away, so it looks like maybe the only thing I will need to buy are the gloves, and maybe a window, might be able to scrounge the window. Much thanks also for the link to ttp.

If you want some real heavy cardboard, find a plastic molding company. Plastic pellets come in a box called a "Gaylord" Some of them held over 2,000 pounds of pellets... They are made of the thickest cardboard I ever saw. Chances are they will give you an old one...

Could be kinda embarassing to admit, but mine is mostly cardboard & duct tape. I made an angle iron frame for the base, put some expanded metal in for a "floor" and stuck a 5 gallon bucket under the hopper funnel for the pick up tube. Yeah, it uses a real cheap suction type gun, too! One day when I have time I'll rebuild it with plywood and add a dust collector but in the meanwhile, I'm still finding modifications I want to make when I build the "real" one and except for the duct tape and my time this one was free. A resperator is a REAL good idea, too. It's a cheap, quick & dirty job but it makes a decent prototype so you can decide what you really need - a trashed refrigerator box is free - experiment and decide what you really need.

Forgot to mention - the "window" in my prototype is a faceshield lens.

I made one out of 3/8 plywood and 2x4's. Inside dimensions something like 46"x30". The sloped front (probably 30 degrees from vertical) and the top are double-hinged so that both can be folded back allowing me to drop in heavy stuff with my engine hoist.

The gun is from a Craftsman siphon-feed setup. The bottom portion forms an upside-down pyramid with the siphon pickup at the apex so that the abrasive is constantly recycled.

I just gave the plans to Hobo on [usually on the Ford]section.I told hom when he is done to offer them on tool talk. However, the plans make one only 36"x24".doubling the dimensions on the plan wont really work right. The gloves and the window are available from TIP as is the dust collector. All the hopper is is a square plywood at the bottom with a hardware store hinge on it with some weatherstriping to seal it.Ive noticed a trailer door had a window that could work .In the plans the hopper is just 4 triangular pieces of the plywood with the bottom cut open.I did not make the plywood part myself,my father did that. The legs are just angle iron. The box is about 5/8" thick plywood.Anybody have any drafting software?I do but have no idea how to use it.Its called Design.Maybe you could mock up with cardboard.

TIP sells kits to make your own. It includes windows ,hoses, blast gun ETC. I have seen the cabinet made fron a combine tank or a 250 gallon fuel drum.
