I bought an 7hp.60gal. Coleman compressor. A while back from farm & fleet. The owners book susgested to use an multi weight compressor oil? In my old 2hp.compressor. the book said to use 30W non detg.oil. Is their something to these new compressor oils to justify the expense, or should. I just use the 30W Non Detg.oil. Thanks Dave F.

Dave F.,
Is the compressor a rotary or a reciprocating(piston)?
Reciprocating types have a crankcase for the solids to settle as has been allready mentioned.
Non-detergent is approriate for this type.
Some of the models out now are rotary and reguire the special oils you mentioned.

With air compressors, I was always told, that you use a straight weight non detergent oil. The reason for using non detergent, is, any solids do not stay in suspention. They fall to the bottom of the crankcase. Usually you do not have an oil filter on an air compressor, as you do on a car engine. So you don't want anything to stay in suspention in the oil and getting repeatedly pumped through the compressor.

What they are telling you is that yes you could probably put a cheaper oil in it. However, you probably spent a good deal of money on it? Why not make the one time purchase of the correct oil. What if something happens under warranty to the compressor, they would probably tell you that you were out if you didn"t use the correct oil. The compressor oil I got was clear, and pretty thin, the compressor did not take that much. My advice would be to get the correct grade of oil.

Compressor oil is a bit more expensive but since I can buy it at Walmart, I figure, 'what the heck' and use it
