my buddy has an 87 moto 4 that runs o.k., and doesn't smoke, but seems to have a lot of gas in the oil...what does this mean? What could cause this, and what's the fix...thanks deanop

To check the needle and seat remove the carb and turn upside down while blowing into the fuel line with your mouth it should not pass air.Flip it over and it will.Even on my tractor I shut off the fuel petcock. If the needle and seat leak the gas will flow out onto the soil or the barn floor.Do you want gas all over your garage or on your soil.Always shut off gravity feed fuel systems even on updraft carbs.

The needle and seat on the float go bad and have to be replaced. A fourwheeler does not lean over like a bike so it is not necessary to turn off the petcock.

its a 350 motor....i'm pretty sure the fuel has always left on...its hardly been run for years..he changed the oil at my house this winter cause of gas in oil, and now without hardly running the oil has alot of gas in crankcase..i'll mention regarding fuel shutoff..Is this the only way for gas to be there?thanks deanop

I have the exact same model and love it. It has an extra heavy duty rear axle and hitch, high and low range, 10 speeds. Mine has never given me any trouble- except- one time it wouldn't start. I took off the seat and looked in the airbox. It had a whole bunch of gas in it- the valve didn't shut off. (one time out of hundreds) Since then I try to remember to shut off the petcock when stopping.

Yes there is no other way for it to get in there.Always shut the gas off any motor not in use as I said before. If you dont the cylinders will wear much faster as the gas washes the oil off the surface.

If you are talking about a Yamaha quad 80c the petcock is leaking and the float level off just enough to allow seepage. This is a very dangerous condition .Pull the fuel line and make sure Off position is stopping flow.Drain oil also.If he leaves the gas on all the time that will do it.Motorcycles are meant to have petcocks off when not in use.I know a motorcycle mechanic badly burned from a Harley Sprint explosion.Im talking badly burned.Check the petcock first if he has been shutting off when not using the machine.
