Deer seem determined to run in front of my car...

This is the second time this has happened. I've been pretty lucky so far with other vehicles, but it seems that deer are determined to be hit by my newer car.

About a week after I got it, a deer was quietly grazing at the very edge of a wide ditch in the middle of the afternoon. I had a funny feeling about the critter so I moved my foot to the ready on the brake. At the very last second, when the stupid animal had to run all out to get in front of my car, it took off and raced like it was insane to get in front of my car.

This happened again yesterday, but at sunset. I know they're more active at sunset. It is really strange with this car. I've seen lots of deer in my other vehicles, but they never act like this.

Are those whistle things I've seen helpful ? Is there anything else I could try ? The car is silver, does this make a difference ?

Trying to get the deer to blow those little "deer horns" is like trying to teach a pig to sing, it only wastes your time and annoys the animal. My brother in law swears they do work. Since he installed two of the "deer horns" on his rifled pump shotgun with a scope, he has not seen a deer within 300 yards when he has the shotgun with him.

I once mistakenly put them on BACKWARDS! I had a whole herd of deer chasing me down the road! never mount them backwards!

I live about three miles from a small town. There are at least twenty deer killed each year in this three miles of highway. I have been using whistles for thirty years. I have seen a lot of deer. I hit one in the dark but I saw a mountain lion about ten feet behind him and he was not listening to me. My brother quit installing them several years ago. He has hit two.

Have a extensive university report on a study they did - said they were ineffective. I can look it up for you if you want - but is MANY pages long, and covers numerous other deer avoidance strategies that don't work either.

Well, I am half afraid to mention this, but here goes..... laugh if you all want to.

Here, at the hometown airport we have lots of deer in the area.

I mounted those deer avoidence whistles on each wing strut of my Cessna 150 when I was doing student pilot night training. Non-FAA approved, though. Shame on me.

I have personally seen deer scatter along the sides of the runway, especially at night on approach. Need to have about 40 miles per hr. or so. So, I believe in the devices.

Also, when flying over a small airport while making a downwind leg of the approach, the runway was covered with sea gulls. This was down near Savannah GA. Well the birds scattered, too.

So, for what they cost, I have them on both my car and serrvice van. Remember you need about 40 mph. for them to work.

I know of a Sheriff's Department that has them on all of their vehicals, a whole dang fleet of them. I asked a deputy buddy how they work, and he said like a magnet - If there aint a deer around for a million miles, one will find the front of their vehicals now. So I hear.

I put some whhistlers on my wife's car when we lived in NC. She asked me what they were, I said metorite deflectors :) She did not hit a deer or a metorite in that car, so they must work :)

If you put them on backwards they will attract the deer, you must make sure they are facing the correct direction..... .

Daughter in law had them. 1 deer and 8000 bucks later, I'd say they don't work. Hey IHC red, I had an "OLD" timer tell me one time, first thing you do when you get a new car, take a ball peen hammer and put a small dent in the grill.

Last time I tried that it was on a 1968 LTD and the whole grill shattered and fell on the ground. It was die cast and chrome plated.

Deer pay about as much attention to whistles as the do to deer crossing signs.

Can't speak for the whistles. The last set I had broke off when my wife hit a deer. I do know wearing blaze orange repels deer. Everytime I have blaze orange on, I never see any within target range.

Now theres an idea. Keep your blaze orange vest and hat in the car along with a deer rifle and you'll probably never see one.
Probably could do the same thing by considering the car an off season deer harvester and keeping a good field dressing knife in the car. Maybe put a little sign on the grill. They'll know.

FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, THEY DON'T DO THE JOB, IF THEY HEAR ANYTHING, THEY CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE THE HECK TO GO, SO THEY TAKE ANY ROUTE THAT LOOKS GOOD TO THEM, IF YOU SEE THEM IN TIME, AND YOU HAVE A FIRE TRUCK SIREN, USE IT, THAT MIGHT WORK. NOW FOR THE ULTRASONIC MOUSE REPELERS, I BOUGHT ONE ONCE, AND PLUGGED IT IN, THEN PUT SOME PEANUT BUTTER BY THE ULTRASONIC REPELER, GUESS WHAT, THEY SURE ENJOYED THE PEANUT BUTTER, THEY DO NOT WORK WAS MY CONCLUSION. HAVE A GOOD DAY..

I don"t believe they ever worked. If they did at one time, they don"t anymore because they are so common. If they produce a sound, it is now as common as the other sounds a car makes.

Tests by Colorado State Univercity says that they are useless. Same for ultrasonic mouse repelers. People keep buyiny then though.

I have ultrasonic mouse repellers that work. Was covered up by the boogers in my shop and house. No mice for 3 years now with the repellers.

You need to build what they call around here an oil field bumper and install on your car. Then you can just flatten them ! Carry your skinin knife and get some venison receipes.

My friend did that- he nailed a Pontiac with his Chevy truck with the "cow-catcher" on the front. Even though the police report clearly said the other guy was as fault, some slick lawyer got him sued because of the bumper. He ended up buying the other guy a new car and paying other expenses. Also got him in trouble with his insurance company and Chevy - the bumper changed the dynamics of the vehicle and wouldn't allow the airbag to deploy - hence no warranty. His truck plowed through the car easily, making a spectacular accident out of something that shouldn't have been as bad. He found out the hard way that the "road warrior " look may be neat (and works good on deer!), it may not always be a good idea. His new truck still has the factory bumper.

Don't forget - it was the lawyer that brought the lawsuit.

But it was the JUDGE that allowed them to win!

And Judges do throw out frivolous lawsuits.

Just a thought - in case you find YOUR car totaled by a snow plow in summer when it should have been a minor accident.

I do believe they work if installed properely. I don't have them on my truck. But I do have ladder rack and ladders on my truck , which creates a whistle like noise. While driving down the roads , it catches the attention of dear. Note that when not traveling at least 40 miles per hour , No Whistle noises for deer to hear.

There was an interesting study done on them by Motorcycle Consumer News years ago.

They are almost never installed correctly, and cannot produce a tone as a result. They must be in a clear air column, which cannot exist on the front bumper of a car in front of the grill.

Deer cannot hear ultrasonic sounds. So even when working, the deer will not hear them.

All that said, the study also used them on bikes in known deer areas and empirically showed the deer responding to them. The sighting of "deer butts" increased appreciably.

Summary was that they cannot work, but do apparently work.

Maybe the whistles don't work, but here's a tip for getting a deer frozen in your headlights out of the way - toggle back and forth between low beam and high maybe a half dozen times. Seems to break their headlight hypnosis, they''ll move off the road. My 2

The deer will not blow the whistles. When deer are running from something all the whistles in the state won"T help if they are just for a walk the whistles might make them stop to look before crossing the road.

From a post here a couple of months ago the general opinion seems to be that they do not work.

I am in disagreement with others and do believe that they work. They don"t scare the deer away, but rather cause them to freeze where they are at while they attempt to pinpoint what the sound is and where it is coming from.

Will they help? Maybe, maybe not, but for less than $10 I"d take a chance on them. It certainly wouldn"t be the worst dollar spent even if they don"t work.

I've been using a deer whistle I bought from Cabelas that hooks up to a 12 volt source(I hooked mine to my headlights). Deer seem to notice it about 300-400 feet away and either in spite of it or because of it, I haven't hit any
deer--yet.
