Dad and I went to a Cummins tool show last weekend and picked up a hand powered log splitter (not an axe you weisenheimer). Its got a bed like any logsplitter but uses a 10 ton bottle jack for the force. We tested it with some willow dad had around the house and it split as nice and easy as you please which I think bodes well. Of course willow splits easy anyway but it was all we had for testing. We're hoping that this will allow us to more easily split the poplar we have on the farm. I've found that poplar smaller than about 8" is easy to split with the axe but larger than 10" gets to be a real pain since its usually real wet and won't dry unless its split.

Anybody ever use one of these splitters? I'll let you know more in May when we go up to camp and really put it to the test. For $100 I don't expect a whole lot...

I have seen one in the Harbor fright catalog for years. I have to split 10 full cords of wood for heat each year. my experience with bottle jacks being slow I figured the cycle times for that thing would put me about two years behind schedule. Unless it has a lot high ratio than usual.

I figured it'd be slow too, we split all our wood by hand now and as I said those big poplar rounds are really rough to split so I figured this would at least help with those.
The jack has 2 pistons and our speediest results were with 2 of us jacking opposite (so one going up while the other goes down) and it worked pretty quick.

My dad had one, he liked it because he could use it in the basement for the ocaisional large piece that wouldn't fit in the stove. Slow going compared to the powered type but they work. I prefer to split wood when it is frozen.
