HF Tire Changer...Any Good?

I accidently posted this question on the Tractor Talk board. It is more appropriate for Tool Talk. Harbor Freight lists their $70.00 tire changer on sale for $35.00. Is this unit any good? Would it be any better than the tire tools I use now? It would be nice to have a changer for wagon/trailor tires, etc.... What do you think? Anyone have experience with this unit? Thanks, Glenn F.

I like mine. I've got it anchored to crete with 4 5/8 bolts and expansion anchors. Had one at work on a quarter inch plate about 3 feet square
and that wasn't enough. Found a 1 and a half inch plate at the "yard" and that holds her down. The plate weighs 570 lbs., I know, I paid for it by the pound. Drilled and tapped it so it wouldn't have bolt heads on the bottom. Ed

I agree with what has already been said. I got one and have used it to change some riding mower tires and also the tires on our little commuter car. You do need something very solid to bolt it to (as in, solid enough that you can use all your weight against that long lever bar), but it will do the job. Mine has been worth the money and has been a useful tool for teaching me patience. YMMV.

Well made unit. I've worked the heck out of mine over the years changing truck tires and the like. Contrary to the claim made, the center pipe is not thinwall.

Hi Glenn,

I bought one last year for small tires. Works good and might hold up for awhile if you take it easy on it. The center post is the weakest link as the pipe is thinn wall.

The bead breaker has come in handy for small tires and it needs to be anchored to use the tire tools. I've done 13" and 16" with it but really want it for the 6" golf cart tires.

Well worth the $30 on sale at the HF store for what I wanted.

Dad's got one. We've used it on lawnmower and snowblower tires, works slicker than a smelt. For real tires I agree you'd be better off with real tire tools, but for little stuff its handy. Dad mounted his on a piece of 4x8 long enough to step on the end.

I bought one for small tires and it works good. To hold it down I mounted it on an angle made from 2x2x3/16 sq. tubing with a 1/4" plate on top....fits into a pickup receiver hitch.

You must have a solid floor to bolt it to, or don't bother.

The metal and lever arm are not not all that strong.
Downright flimsy comes to mind. The tool works ok for 2 or maybe 4 ply sidewall car, light pickup, or utility trailer tires. For those 8-ply hay wagon tires, forget it.

ive seen them, never used one. looks pretty cheesy to me. i"d invest in a good pair of tire irons, and a bead braking sledge.
