OT Theft resistant bolts?

Had the misfortune of having my work outboard motor stolen a few days ago, A Honda 40 hp 4 stroke, a pretty heavy hit.

It was through bolted to the transom with standard SS bolts, are there any SS bolts available with a theft resistant head, or one that uses an unusual tool? The bolts are 1/2" x about 4-5", They took the bolts and nuts too,lol Thanks guys

Same deal with a company truck about five years ago. In FULL daylight at about 11AM next to a restaurant not ten feet from the front door! Truck had Pennsy plates and they took the damn screws too! Good fix is this. Bought round head screws with phillips head. Put on the plates and snug them down real good. Take a nice big drill bit and drill out the center. Just TRY to get them off now! Biggest trick is to make it so a vice grip or some such will not hold. Bash or weld the threads, or use GREEN lock tite. This is aviation and you need to burn or cut the stuff off. FUn fun jeffcat

If you can find someone in traffic safety, the bolts they use to hold the lights on safety barrells and PCC barrier wall have a tamper proof head. If you can't find anything let me know I can get them for you. They're not SS but they are a good bolt. Last out in the weather for years.

Use your stainless bolts then hit the nuts with a tig or mig welder , this makes them permanet and they won't be getting any more of your motors unless they cut the transon off.

Hi gcs,

Take the bolt on a grinder and make a flat spot on two sides leaving threads on the rest so the nut can thread on easy, then drill a hole for a pad lock thru the flats. Four brass padlocks keyed alike at Wal-Mart, $13 set.

I put carriage bolts with double nuts and smashed the threads with a hammer on my motor. I also have a motor lock on it. The smashed threads make it a little hard for me to remove the motor but so far it has worked.

I'd like something theft resistant in SS for license plate bolts too! PIA to replace "lost" license plates! Besides, it gripes me that someone is driving free on my tab -probably no insurance either.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, that's an expensive piece of hardware.

It looks like you're not the only one who's had that problem; McGard (see link below) makes outboard motor locks just like you're looking for.

If you can't find them locally, it looks like Defender Industries sells them for 9 bucks apiece. Check them out at http://www.defenderus.com

Hi Jake, I'm a commercial bayman on Long Island, NY
Use the motor on a 19' skiff for commercial fishing.
It's funny, there hasn't been a motor stolen in years around here, just my luck.
Thanks all for the responses, I checked the one site given, then did my own search, like Duh, why didn't I think of that,lol
Got this new technology, but a 52 year old brain,lol

What you are referring to is tamper proof.An example would be an allen type with a small pin in the middle so the allen type wrench needs a small hole in it.Its probably easier and cheaper to tack weld the nuts in place and use an exhaust cutter to cut them off if needed.McMaster -Carr might have tamper proof hardware.

I don't know if any kind of bolts would keep a thief from getting the motor, if their good at the trade? Theft proof bolts could cost you some hi dollar boat repair, but most likely the loss of boat,motor and all. Hope you had good insurance.

The goal of theft deterrent is to make your stuff unattractive to a theif. If yours will require a cutting torch and the one 6 docks down only needs an adjustable wrench, guess which one is going to disappear? Just peening the bolt down over the nut is a pretty effective method. You can get them off in a couple of minutes with a grinder but the theif won't want to be using a noisy grinder at 3 AM.
