MIG gun liner

Is thered any cleaner/lub that can be used in the liner of a mig welder? I ran some slightly rusted .030 wire and it kept going slower and slower till it finally stoped. Now a clean wire won't go thru the liner, even if I try to run it thru by hand. The liner is a coiled steel cable like an old choke cable. I know PB Blaster or the like will clean it, but what will it do to the welds? I can remove the liner to clean it and let the solvents evaporate, but will that get rid of any contamination?

When i had similiar situation i used a air blow gun.I took off the tip and blew backwards out came a big puff of dust

Slowpoke, Buy a new liner and they make a wick that will lube the wire(realy it just helps wipe the dust from the wire)but I have customers that won`t weld without them. Support your local welding supply store,the job you save may be mine.

Replace the liner, it is considered a consumable. You will be much happier with the welding experience.

I had a problem with moisture and my mig wire. The barn / shop is not always warm and cozy, and we tend to get a bit of rain on the west coast. After throwing out a couple big spools of wire
and replacing the liner, I put a 25W lightbulb on a cord inside the welder under the spool. Now whenever I'm finished welding I plug it in. It doesn't get very warm, but it does keep the moisture out and stops the rust. Good luck, Grant

paint thinner or aectone can help to clran it. just remember next time throw the wire in the junk or keep it from getting rusty.

You might as well replace the liner,you will never get all the rust and crud out of it. The addition of penetrating oil will affect your welds,and probably won't help the gummed up liner.

Thanks to all of you for the answers. Here's what I did...I called the weld supply and asked about cleaning the liner. The counterman said in the old days acetone was used for cleaning but I probably had a bent liner. A new one was $10-$15.
I pulled the liner and found no bends. It probably had less than 3 hours of welding, so with nothing to loose I ran PB blaster over it, and within about 3 minutes the wire ran thru like a new liner. (Just like on the choke cable of my Case VAC.) After being unable to find my acetone and pricing a quart at $7+, I am going to try brake cleaner to remove the PB Blaster.
I'm not welding anything that's critical, so I can't see any reason my fix won't work....Thanks again to the best guys on the net!

Brake cleaner with perchol(something or other) will clean your liner and not mess up the weld. I use it to clean aluminum before welding. Soak the liner in a pan, then blow it out. Be careful not to breathe any fumes from heated perc. It creates phosgene gas,same stuff the Jerrys gassed the Allies with in WWI.
