Flux Core Wire Welder Modification

I currently own an inexpensive flux core wire welder. Unlike true MIG welders the gun is always hot. I'm thinking of modifying the wiring so that I can control power to the torch with the trigger switch on the torch. The unit I have is a Campbell Hausfield, I was wondering if anybody had done this yet. And if so could you share your wiring plan with me. If not I'll just do it myself. If I come up with my own plan I'm planning on using a relay to control power distribution.

Thanks..
Bill

Sounds like all you need to do is install a properly rated contactor inline for the actual welding current. Like your saying you'll most likely also have to add a relay actuated by the trigger on the gun which would in turn actuate the drive motor as well as the contactor for the current. The main thing is to make sure the contactor you get is made to handle the welding current without arcing the contacts and welding them together. It shouldn't be all that hard to accomplish. Good luck.

I don't know a thing about these but wouldn't it be better to switch the low amperage primary side of the transformer rather than the high amperage secondary which feeds the rectifier.
