I had a loner set of tanks and regulators that went back to their owner. I need a decent set of tanks and regulators. I have found several places on the web that sell tanks - anyone have any opinions?

Thanks for the excellent responses. I have a Smith Airline torch - great for what I need. I will see about the "lease" plan for the tanks and regulators.

Hi Tip,

Theres nothing finner than a Victor 100 torch. Small body for great hand control and less hand fatique. A with a 3/16"x25ft hose works well for shop use. The torch is rated for 1-1/2" cutting or brazing 1/2" plate. Great quality and will last a very long time.

Nothing wrong with other brands other than the large mixing body size is like using a club.

Another great tool is a shade No.4 face shield. Beats welding goggles by a long shot.

I really think you'll get better prices for cylinders at your local gas supplier vs internet and shipping. You'll never get the same cyliders back as most are a exchange. I paid $165 for 220cft owner cylinder two years ago.

I have a set of Victor torches that has given me good service for 30 yrs. I have several bottles for which I have a lifetime lease. One set I have had for 30 yrs. Venders in my area of Mi will not fill others bottles so you need to get your bottles where you are going to get them filled. I get a bill every 10 yrs for $10/bottle for inspection fees.

I agree with Paul, I have owned my bottles for years, Oxy. Acetylene. CO2 and argon. Never had any problem exchanging any one of them for full bottle. And it does not make any difference from whom I got my bottles from the last time around. I don't like paying for something I do not nor will ever own!! I use both Victor and Smith regulators and torches....Keith

I own my bottles and my supplier (a national company that keeps changing it's name so i can never remember) treats them like leased bottles. I just bring in the empties and they exchange them, no inspections or annual fees or anything. Seems like the best of both worlds to me. Paul

The bottles are stamped with a date code. I think the bottles have to be reinspected every 10 years. If you keep them past the inspection date and the guy is sharp enough to look, you will pay for the inspection fee, plus lose a bottle if it fails. I have 2 sets of Ox/Acy bottles and have paid one reinspection fee in 30 years. I does happen! My large mixed gas (Argon/C02) is a lease bottle.

Tip, Lease the tanks,sometimes you can still get a life time lease,some sell a 20yr lease. The reason to lease is the inspection fees and bad valves.(if you lease you do not pay for repairs) The cheapest way is to lease an OX tank and burn propane from a 100# tank. Retal on a torch is about $175.00 for Smith. kjm

I bought a couple from the place in Indiana that sells on eBay. I got several - a small set for a portable outfit, a 40 Nitrogen for A/C work and a 125 for Argon. I just took my new bottles into my regular supplier. They put them in the empty pile and gave me exchange cylinders.

I agree with the DR, either Smith or Victor. I've used both and they have all given good service. As for your bottle situation, it's so much easier to lease them than to own them. There is never a problem getting them filled and typically it's less expensive. Plus if you go through a large supplier such as National Welders, then you can swap out an empty botle at any one of their stores and usually do the same at other stores that aren't National per se but that they are affiliated with. It doesn't cost but a little bit each year to lease two big bottles of Oxy. and Acet. and depending on how much you use them they can last along time. But go to buy two smaller (private owned) size bottles and your talking a pretty good chunck up front, plus any extras they might want to tack on on down the line for pressure checking them, etc before they'll swap them out for you. Then too if the place you buy them from doesn't give you good service your stuck with them where with leased bottles you can always take the bottles back and go with a different supplier. If your in business and, can have a use for them, with the lease you can also write off the cost every year as a business expense where as with a bought bottle your gonna get one shot for the initial purchase. ( I think I'm still right there anyway, heck the IRS changes things every year....) I don't know what area your in but here in NC, where I am, National has treated us better than any of the other places we tried over the years. We're just small a two man operation and keep a total of maybe twelve tanks of various cutting and welding/shielding gases on hand but we get treated like we're one of the biggest accounts they have. You can't beat good service.

I can only rent bottles there is no owning bottles nobody here will fill them.Must be like mob controlled or something I would love to be able to own bottles.I would have saved a fortune in leasing fees by now.Blame the Sopranos I guess.

Same here, I just got my yearly rent bill-$43 each for a total of 86 dollars a year !plus I pay for the fill-up. They won't fill owner bottles unless you have a TANK TITLE ? what ever that is, -mike

I have a "tank title" for my 125 argon. It is just a Invoice from the seller showing the tank description and serial numbers. Basically to show you didn't steal the bottle of a construction site somewhere.

I use Victor because a salesman took the time to come to the Marine Corps welding school and give a good demonstration about oxygen[non-flammable]and acetylene usage and give free litterature to me as a student I guess his sales ploy worked on me. Victor also has a unique gas mixing feature built in.Smiths is also a quality brand.I dont think it would be wise to try an unknown or imported type.I see alot of pros with the Smiths.
