Quality of Northern's 12-ton Shop Press

Northern Tool has a 12-ton shop press that's pretty reasonable. Anyone ever use one to know what kind of quality it is? Thanks for the help.

i use a 25 ton napa press , its got a bottle jack on it. it wont get it with everything without some heat. so i would guess half the press wouldnt do much. lucasss

Harbor Freight has their 20 ton on sale for $169 right now. Picked one up Tuesday.

unless you are not going to be pressing much, a 12 ton press is kinda light. 20 ton is better. and I am sure the price is not that much differant.

For a shop press, 12 tons is not very much. I have a 20 ton and at times wish it was a 40 ton. Consider something larger than a 12. We had a 450 ton hydraulic and 2 500 ton mechanical stamping presses where I was manager for 30 years. That is serious pressure.

Can't say for sure about the Northern one but I have a Harbor Freight 20 ton and it works just great for my occasional needs. I looked at both a 12 and a 20. I decided that too big was better than too little and the price difference wasn't all that much. If you look at HF, remember they go on sale about twice a year.

I have one, its fine for my use. The top cross bar flexes slightly when getting up there in pressure. I have never had another press to compare to, but mine serves my needs. I an pretty confident this is one item where cheep is fine.

The thing I've heard recently(probably here) is that with the price of steel these days you can't hardly build one yourself for what these sell for.

And one other good thing- it's made out of plain old iron so if you ever should need to, you can grind a bit of paint off and weld on some reinforcements where needed.

I was in Northern Tool several weeks ago looking at retractable air hose reels. Noticed that some of the items there are the same that HF has,but more expensive.
