I am confused on the different hydraulic fittings. Will a hose with male NPT fittings work with a JIC female fitting? Thanks

Terry

Terry, the term JIC refers to Joint Industrial Conference which developed the standards for these fittings. Often one of the best sources for fittings adapters is a place that specializes in selling heavy truck brakes repair parts. Take your parts with you when you go. Some of the surplus hydraulic stuff sold is from aircraft, which uses another standard, but the truck brake centers have been able to help me there too. One aircraft cylinder that I bought was converted by disassembling the cylinder, welding the ports shut, drilling and tapping for the desired fitting. This welding should be done with some skill. Hope these tips help you.

there's also sae straight fitting which depends on an O-ring for sealing.

Terry:

You need an adapter to go from JIC fittings to NPT. JIC fittings are designed for flare fittings and have a machined thread and a mating flare angle of 37 degrees (rather than 45 degree like copper tubing). NPT are tapered and depend on screwing the threads in deep enough to cause an interference fit.

For example a 1/2" JIC fitting would have a diameter of 3/4" (.750") with 16 threads per inch and a 1/2" NPT thread would have a diameter of .840 with 14 threads per inch.

Hope this helps Tom R.

No, those two fittings will not work together. Pipe threads seal because they are tapered, and JIC fittings seal on the flat surfaces. JIC and SAE fittings won`t work together either, because besides using different threads, JIC uses 37 degree angles and SAE uses 45 degree.
