OT-Power Stroke Chip

I bought a used 99 F-250 w/ a power stoke. I"m thinking about a chip and have a couple questions.

Which one did you buy? Would you buy it again?
Did you get any mileage increase?
Did you add exhaust or air-intake modifications?

Had a boss that had a 01 f series with extended cab and 4 X 4 automatic. He purchased most of his parts from an outfit called BullyDog. He had the aftermarket turbine housing, Exhaust system, chip, programmable torque converter lock out, and I installed the aftermarket high performance injectors and the BullyDog Propane injection. The transmission came from an outfit in Littleton, Co. He warrantied it for life, didn't care what you did with the truck. anyway, the boss had a 35 foot enclosed trailer he pulled. Ran over 90 mph with it no problem, except for he couldn't keep the trailer tires from getting hot and blowing.

Our local transmission shop (a real shop that does all their own work, not sending it out) told me about a Power stroke with the chip that repeatedly took the bearings out of the manual transmission. The customer that owned it did a lot of heavy towing (50k per year) I do a lot of towing and have never trashed the tranny- no chip, 267,000 miles. Just so you are aware of what it may all affect.

I have a 97 PS.I chipped it, did the exhaust straight pipes all the way, and put in a full set of gauges.
Fuel milage may be a little better, shifts alot better, pulls like a dream. It is recoomended to change your downpipe and install a pyrometer when youy install a chip. There is alot of good info at the dieselstop.com..... Jim

Definately get an EGT guage installed if you chip the engine and plan of pulling with it.

A friend bought a new PS F350 supercrew in 1999, a chip was the first thing he did to it. It would melt the rear tires taking off, after 250,000 miles he sold it, never did anything to it but change the oil, filters, and tires. and I don"t know what chip he bought, I remember him saying it was $400,00 bucks.

I bought a Hypertech Power Programmer III for my 2000 F-250, manual tranny. I have no complaints or problems for the last 5 years (120,000 miles). The only other modification I did was to eliminate the muffler for a little better flow. It is relatively mild as far as chips go (50 hp), I gained maybe 0.5-1.5 mpg. Do you have an automatic tranny? You should probably make sure whatever you choose modify's the shifting settings. If you get anything, it is a good idea to monitor exhaust temps.

I don't have one and I don't know much about them other than to check around on the web, I read where some of them (can't remember if it was the Ford or Dodge) are mighty tough on transmissions, especially after chipping. I think I read about it in 4wheel and Offroad but I don't remember.

I'd personally live with a little less power than buy a new trans...
