Bought a 4 1/2 angle head grinder from Cummins Tool Co. For $19.99 plus tax Used it 10 minutes and the smoke all leaked out of the case. Then it stopped working. Sent it back but cost $10.07 to send back. If I am lucky I will get another one just like the last one.

Dewalt is making cheaper models now , so I bought one. They work well and keep all the smoke in them. The darn things swallow the wheel stop button after you change about 5 disks or so.

I used to work in a Gardner-Denver plant that made right angle grinders and nut setters. The design is pretty simple and if you got smoke out of the casing you probably fried the bearings in the rotor cylinder end plates. My guess is that it would be tough to replace the bearings. Can"t imagine that they are lubed from the air line so adding oil to the inlet probably wouldn"t have helped.

As a matter of interest, the most difficult part to make on that grinder was the right angle housing itself. Holding the perpindicularity of the bores was a tough thing to do. We used to run them on a turret lathe with a right angle fixture bolted to the faceplate. Not many guys could run them successfully. Probably one of the resaons that plant is closed today.

I now have 8 of that size grinder, one a really good one and the other ones cheapos. Two of them were $8 each at flea market. Only one has failed. I repacked the gear case with wheel bearing lube. They then run much quieter and will probably last longer. If one fails, I will not cry for very long.

About 25 years ago, I bought a red Makita homeowner 4" angle grinder. I think it was about $45 then. After probably several hundred hours of use, the gearbox started getting hot and noisy, so I replaced the old grease with Lubriplate GR 132, sold as an enclosed gear grease. Once the gearbox heated up, the grease liquified and started dripping out. I think I'll change to disk brake bearing grease, but I wonder if it can take the high pressure of the gear teeth.

Got one of those 19.95 ones. Works real good, especially in the winter it keeps my hands warm. I am carefull to not run it more that 5 minutes or so at a time.

Hmmmm...

I just bought a 4 1/2" angle grinder from Harbor Freight, for $9.99. I haven"t, yet, lost any of the smoke from out of it, but... since I"ve got a Harbor Freight store within driving distance, even if the smoke were to all leak out and I had to drop another $10 on a new one.... it"d almost be worth it...

FWIW
Steve
