I have no experience with welding but want to dive in... I've seen several old forney welders around here at auctions but don't have any idea what they should go for... I'm just interested in 1/4" and less and not often (general farm work) Is an old 180 going to do it? or should I look at something bigger?

Hi Aaron,

That would be a good machine for a home shop. Most machines had a very stable arc with a 20% duty cycle.

For a single pass you will need about 125a to 150a for 1/8" electrodes, however you can run multi-pass welds for any metal thickness.

Do a search for "weld" on this forum as there's many good welding articles written.

Those old Forney welder kept the farm economy running for years. A quick guess---maybe 30 bucks if rod holder and cables are OK. For 1/4 inch stuff,180 is plenty. I highly recomend that you pay a little more and try for a welder that has DC ability. You once run DC, you won't want to go back. 180 AC-- 130 amp on the DC part would work for you.
