OT - prefab foundation walls

My builder recommends a prefab foundation wall from a company called "superior wall". They are built in a factory with 5000# fiber reinforced cement using rebar in the header and footer. They are set on a packed gravel base below the frost line. No separate footer is needed, part of the wall. Wall sections are bolted together and sealed with polyurethane caulk/glue at the joints. Walls are not supposed to need any addition water proofing due to "low moisture" cement mix. Walls have steel studs and 2 1/2 blue foam insulation already on the interior side ready for drywall.

Anybody familiar with system? First I have heard of it. Am looking to build a retirement home and want it to last PLUS be as maintance free as possible.

As with most things, the posted opinions vary. But notice that everyone who has posted and has direct experience with these is very pleased. Those who are posting and are not convinced of the value of Superior Walls are also saying they do not have experience with them. But I suspect that the success of these may lead to contractors jacking up the price. My contractor was trying to get established and I got a really good price.

Hey B.D., pretty sure I said the only negative thing which was that the insulation, if inside, was in the wrong place. That has nothing to do with Superior. Anybody who places insulation inside the foundation wall would have a better house if it was outside. That goes for cast-in-place, block, tilt-up, precast. Yours included.

Experience with Superior not required. Oak Ridge Labs did quite a bit of testing that confirmed what was clear already to me. Mass is best left inside the insulation. The reason I already understood was that mass, a huge amount, is our only heating/cooling system. Superior pricing I know nothing about, but I'd be surprised indeed if it was competitive with cast-in-place.

I am presently living in a new home with those foundation walls. They are very dry and warm. I am very satisfied with my decision to use them. Good luck. deereford

Hi Chuck,

Superior walls have been around awhile. If your builder wants to go that way, it's reason enough. When you hire a man for the job it's generally best to do it his way.

They aren't anything I'd use, but I don't mind doing cast-in-place on site. Insulation on the inside of foundation walls really isn't the best place.

Watch those details like a hawk if you want your new home to be anywhere close to maintenance free. I used copper on my exposed walls. Not a bad choice for a conventional roof either.

They are being used at present on the " This Old House Project". One thing they Stress is to very carefully install the backfill. Pour the Floor before doing any Backfilling and Brace the Walls real Good until the fill has compacted.

I haven't heard of them, and may be the world's greatest. Do your self a favor though, check with your building code before investing to make sure that the are permissable before you invest. They may be, and may not. Good luck on the retirement, enjoy every second of it, and don't make yourself scarce.

Many new homes going in around western New York , useing the very same basement walls your talking about. Even the brand name is the same. Very good foundation walls. You'll be happy.
