My wife wanted me to ask my "tractor friends" when they start planting their gardens. We live in Michigan. Anyone know when a good time to plant is?

She has a couple of flats full of flowers that really need to get into the ground. How early can she start?

Here in Western Pennsylvania, if you want your garden to last, you'd better wait until after Memorial Day to plant anything affected by frost! And, thats taking a big chance! We've had snow up until that time! Not very often, but you can take the chance where you live. It all depends on the weather isobars! I was told an isobar is where you go to drown your sorrows, after the many tomato plants you planted the middle of April are now covered by frost! by: rustyj

I am way south of you, but a lesson I have learned..... Warm weather crops are not going to grow until soil temp. is right... Here, setting out Tomatoes & peppers can vary by a month, & by June you cannot tell which ones were set out first..... In fact the first planted ones often get stunted by a cool spell (Not Frost), & never catch up to the later planted ones.....

There's a lot of variables. For instance, I've heard some prize pumpkin growers put a cloche (portable greenhouse) over their plants and use electric heat cables in the ground. So, the question is, how much trouble does she want to go to? It also depends what you're planting. I've had potatoes grow that were cast offs from the previous season. In general unless extreme measures are taken seeds or plant transplants are wasted trying to beat the cold weather odds.

Garden planted on March 17th. Gotta get those potatoes in the ground! Peas too. Now with two inches of recent rain, its a mud bog, but by golly her garden is planted....

Around here, planting is usually about 3 weeks after the last of the snow melts. Kind of hard to figure this year, since snow was light this winter and it's been gone for 2-3 weeks. Frost is just starting to leave the ground now. First tugs got to MPLS yesterday, 10 days later than usual. SoMN got over 20 inches snow less than two weeks ago. Go by soil temp- corn germinates at 55 degrees at planting depth. Oats likes colder ground. Maybe garden books have info on appropriate temps.

I couldn't resist...

I started my tomatoes and peppers (and such) about the middle of January, on the windowsill.

I planted the garden about 2 1/2 weeks ago. My corn and beans are already 2 - 2 1/2" tall...

In Minneapolis ground temp is 36 degrees on east side of house, there is still ice on the ground in some shaded areas.

I live east of Saginaw. We plant garden middle of May. Ground has warmed up by then. Stuff planted earlier just lays in the ground. Flowers could probably go in in early May.

I have peas and brocoli in flats in a coldframe now. I have peppers in the basement under a light. I just sowed lettuce seed and covered it with straw outside. The wife's bulbs outside have shoots about 6 inches out of the ground now. Near Cleveland low 30s at night now.

I live near Howell, and I still have ice on the ground. It is frozen quite deep yet. It might be a couple of weeks before things get planted around here. I have seen guys planting corn the 1st week of april here, don't think that will happen this year. Easy

go to your local Extension Service office. They usually print a calendar telling what to plant & when. Will also have spacing & planting depth chart.

Depending on what she is planting, as the seed packets say, plant after the last chance of frost. Some veggies do well early such as lettuce, peas, cauliflower, broccoli while some want warm soil or they will not sprout. Started flowers usually do OK unless there is a spell of freezing weather. Then you can cover them and they will do OK. We have had a few garden plants in for several weeks already but have had a very mild winter here. I always tell Vickie to go for it with a few bedding plants. It is so nice to have color in the garden and so what if you have to replant a few early losses! Enjoy!
