JD 4o S Cooling Fan Wrench

I am in need of a wrench to fit the Cooling Fan of a JD 40 S. My Service Manual calls it a "special wrench" and I found out why when I tried to get it loose. It looks like a flat piece of metal, approximately 1/2 inch thick with the hex nut size cut out and a 1/2 inch square hole in the outer perimeter where a 1/2 inch break-over wrench would fit. Anybody out there have any suggestions, or could tell me where to find the wrench ?

Hi Bob,

Am I missing something? Why can't you use the 1/2" square hole with a 1/2" breaker bar?

In any event you didn't give the nut size, but to make a box end wrench doesn't take much besides time. 1/4" x 1" CR flatbar for the socket walls and a 3/4" rod handle. Make a temp mold from 1/8" flatbar then use that to form the socket sides.

End wrench can be made from flat plate, either a flat or offset handle.

Both less than $10 of steel at to days prices.

Bob: Dont that just grip a guys A**? Anymore you need special tool number 3546687XYZ for anything. That tool almost sounds like a GMC fan removal tool. You might get the measurements and go to autozone and check what they have for rent. Sometimes you can jury rig and get by without that "special tool" but having the right tool sure makes it a lot easier.

Yepper... it sure does !! I don't have an open end that large, and I priced one, but they sure are proud of the dang thing. I am considering cutting one out of a hunk of metal and grinding it to fit. I have to figure out how to get a break-over on it though. I searched the local stores for a universal kit, but they are proud of them too and one large enough to fit would have to be a special order. "Thanks" to everyone for the thoughts, guess I will have to suffer a "skint knuckle" to get it loose..... then there's the problem of tightening it up again...!

Cut a socket down and just use the drive end welded on you custom plate hex wrench.

Well, I got out in the shop last nite and did the dirty deed. I made a wrench !.. Cutting and welding and grinding took about 2 hours, but it worked perfectly.. All of the advice I received just forced me into it!... "Thanks" everyone !!

I think you can get to it with an open end if you have the hood and grille off. I have worked on some M,Mt,40W,40T and have only had normal wrenches. If you don't want to pull off the hood maybe go to auto zone or TSC and get an el cheapo wrench and heat it and bend it to fit ?
