Sap's running, but not great yet. First gather was 160 gallons, which boiled down to 4 gallons of light amber. 2nd gather was 140 gallons which boiled down to 5 gallons VERY light, fancy syrup. Nice stuff, lots of fun, but you work for it. The big flows oughta hit next week, if the weather forecast is right. New arch works good, but I see several improvements to make before next year!

Here in Cattaragus co. NY we have been taped since3/19 have had verry good flow. we average 1 gallon per tap per day. the boys that i work with have close to 4000 taps out. I own 300 of them. a lot of work but it is fun to watch a solid stream from the mainline fill a tank.

we have been making syrup for 2 weeks now and looks like it may be ending soon too. we tapped around 2/20 because it seemed that the weather was about to break but it just sat there. we actually started a month later than usual and it has been erratic at best. What we have put up has been very light and good quality tho'. What state are you located in? I am tapping in Connecticut. Cal

Stupid question. I have a common old maple tree here in eastern Co. Would its sap be sugar or some thing else?

Last wekend I was replacing a fencepost and a maple branch kept poking me.like a dummy I snapped of the branch to not annoy me.Big mistake the poking turned into drip, drip ,drip on the head.Next year Im gonna get some containers and go for it.Mac said they all have some sugar.

The best tree for sap is the sugar maple, but here in the UP of Michigan I tap soft Maple. The sugar maple has a slightly higher sugar content in the sap, I still need to boil 40 gallons of sap to get 1 gal of syrup.--Rick

Have you ever checked the sugar content of the sap? Is it in the range of 2% from the soft maple?

Thanks for the help posting the picture! What did I do wrong?

I'm in Northern NY. If I lived any further north, I'd be speaking Canadien.

Gathered 200 gallons of sap yesterday. Will be boiling all day. I see that I need a bigger evaporator. These 14 hr boiling times is getting to me.

Sure - you can tap all maples, but hard or black maples are a bit better

Just heading out to boil about 300 Gallons of sap myself. Just have about 8 Gal. of syrup made so far. Hope it cools off for a few more days. Maybe by the weekend when the help is more plentiful.
