My old 10" Compound Miter saw just died and want to replace it with a new slide compound miter saw. If you have a favorite, please post the Brand/model# so I can look it up. So far I've looked at the DeWalt DW708 12" saw and the Milwaukee 10" Magnum #6496-6, both look like excellent saws and are both in the $600 range. Did find a reconditioned 10" Magnum(R) #6496-8 at the Harbor Freight site for $399. Has anyone had any luck buying name brand reconditioned tools from them? Thanks in advance. Merle

Merle,
I am a former cabinet maker and trim carpenter. I have had the best luck from Milwaukee, Delta, Porter Cable and Makita tools. I'm sure there are other good ones out there.

One thing to check carefully on this type of saw is how well the sliding, tilting and pivioting mechanisms are constructed. Also check how well the adjustments lock into place.

10" blades offer you the best selection of quality blades. Don't skimp on quality here!

For lots of info go to www.taunton.com, then look for the Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking message boards. There are lots of discussions about all kinds of woodworking tools, from the guys who use them everyday.

HTH, John

merle,

I have had great sucess with my bosh 10" compound sliding miter saw, now 4 years old it gives no trouble and is easy to adjust and use. I think its the best. Cost for mine was about $425.00 or so. Think they still make this same product.

good luck,

Bill

Merle, I own a twelve inch delta compound miter saw, really like the ease of adjustment, (Two finger), very easy to read scale. Do some very intricate cuts and has been excellent peice of equip. Also will cut thru a 4x4, and 2x10 in one motion. Personelly can see no need for slider. IMHO Cal

Merle, I have the Dewalt 12" compound miter and alhough it seems to be a good saw I also have a 10" Milwaukee standard miter saw, I like the milwaukee the best. It is just a smoother and more friendly saw, the trigger is easier and more natural to use. My dad and I run a small cabinet shop and we use both these saws every day. When the Dewalt goes out I will be going back to the Milwaukee. I also have a fully equipped cabinet shop and have never seen a use fo the sliding saws, but I would guess if you didn't have a radial arm saw you might would go for the sliding feature. I also very rarely use the compound feature of the Dewalt. Johnny

Hi Merle , Hitachi came out with the first sliding compound miter saw that I know of. I believe it was 8". An old time , very experienced carpenter , happens to be working on the same house I'm working on. He is doing all the trim work , and happens to have that very saw. I can tell just looking at the saw , that it has done a lot of work. The carpenter says it has been a very good saw. If he were to buy another saw , it would be the same one again. he said the 8" does all he wants to do. The carpenter said that he thinks Hitachi has a 10" sliding compound saw now.The carpenter said that he would consider buying a 10" next time , because it is bigger. But then again heavier. I remember looking at the hitachi sliding compound saw when they first come out. I thought they were cheap looking. After looking the carpenters saw over , it doesn't look as cheap as I first thought. My saw is a 10" compound miter. When I go for my next one , it will be a 10" sliding compound.Hitachi would not be ruled out , due the the first impression it gave me years ago , when I just looked at one. I'm not sure who makes the best , but I do believe Hitachi made the first.

If a person has a problem with late model DeWalt products, the position of DeWalt is that it is your problem and they wish you good luck. DeWalt is currently owned by Black and Decker. Much of the DeWalt stuff is just B&D with a different label. Both these tool names are under new ownership in recent years.

10" blades are a lot more common(cheaper and more available) too!
