I just traded in a older craftsman professional screwdriver for a new one. The older one was all black and felt like better quality. The new ones are black and red. Still nice, but way different. It just got me wondering...who makes them now?

Western Forge in Colorado Springs probably made both of your Screwdriver. On one of the red sections of your new screwdriver will have a tiny WF inprinted next to the USA. Don't worry though, it won't be there long if solvent touches it. I miss the old Craftsman Professional screwdrivers. I liked their handles, their hex shanks that would spin easily in your fingertips, and they were very durable. I don't like their all black color but, I still use the hell out of the ones I have. The new professional models aren't bad but, the two component handle is slippery when oily, and their shanks are round. I guess change is constant and since the tool trucks are selling screwdrivers with trilobal, multi-component (hard/soft) handles, Craftsman followed too.

Two Major Suppliers in reply to J Puleo, 03-23-2005 19:54:34
J Puleo --

For 30-some years Sears bought almost all of their Craftsman-branded screwdrivers from Western Forge, a Colorado-based subsidiary of Emerson Electric. Then, a few years ago Sears started buying a substantial portion of the Craftsman-brand screwdrivers from Pratt-Reed.

Most Craftsman tools are source-coded, and the source codes for the main screwdriver vendors are self-evident: Western Forge uses WF, and Pratt-Reed uses PR.

For what it's worth, Pratt-Reed, which has also used the name "Cornwall and Patterson", has made many products, including piano "actions", gliders (the engineless-airplane type of glider), and screwdrivers over their 200+ corporate lifetime. Screwdrivers have been their main product for a number of years, and they have only recently started selling screwdrivers under their own name, having specialized in making and branding screwdrivers for other tool companies for many years. Pratt-Reed claims that they have manufactured screwdrivers for every major US toolmaker.

J Puleo --

I goofed the spelling of Pratt-Read. It's r-e-A-d, not r-e-E-d.

Easy --

Prat-Read's "other" name was CornwAll & Patterson; the Ohio socket-and-wrench maker is CornwEll.

I work in an auto factory and i see a lot of Cornwell impact sockets and rachet wrenches. Don't know if it's the same folks. Easy.
