Why is it common practice to use 3450 rpm motors on air compressor? I would think that since they are geared down, a 1750 rpm would be first choise. Are they cheaper to build? In the 1 to 3 HP size?

Why 3450? competition for a cheap product. Little tidbits I have found to be true:
Slower the motor, the more iron it has, the more expensive it is to make.
3450 motor has two poles. cheap to built.
1785 motor has four poles. cost more, stronger starting. Machinery in general, slower rpm for a given amount of work = longer life. This makes sense, the 1/2 speed motor bearings have only rotated 1/2 as many times. Is 1785 rpm motor solution better? I think so most of the time. You see, the faster something runs the smaller it gets. If I have two 700hp water pumps, both have same GPM and one is at 1200rpm and the other is at 3600rpm the difference is amazing. The 1200 will likely still be running when the 3600 is in the trash pile. Thats my thoughts on the speed thing.
