OT - Rear window defogger in GMC Envoy

Need a little help...The metal tab came off of my rear window on my GMC Envoy. I purchased a kit to glue it back on but that didn't work. Went to the dealer and he charged $60 bucks to glue it back on. It stuck but doesn't work which I assume there is no contact between the tab and the "grid" wires. The dealers solution is to replace the window at $1,300. Any suggestions? Thks

Well it is fixed. I took out the volt meter and there was voltage to the tab but not the grid. I purchased a grid repair kit which I assume is some sort of paint like substance that conducts electricity. I painted that on the tab over to the grid. A $13 fix instead of $1,300 from the dealer. Thanks everyone for your help!

I'm glad to hear you got it fixed. In the document posted by someone else the manufacturer recommended something like 6 coats of paint to fix a line on the grid. Since the paint is probably not a real good conductor, it may take a lot of it to do the job. So in this case the more paint you can get on, the better it will work.

This happended to the original owner of my 98 Chevrolet Z-28 Camaro. The original owner took a towel, and swiped the inside of the rear hatchback window to clean it, and broke it off. Chevrolet picked up the tab under warranty and a new glass was installed. If the vehicle is newer Chevrolet might pay some. Its unbelievable how these things happen.

I got the conductive paint at an auto parts store. It was about $10 for a little tiny bottle. You might have to carefully scrape away any protective coating that is on the plated on metal before using the paint. An easy way to find a break in this stuff is to put probes from a DC voltmeter on each side of a suspected open connection. With the defogger turned on, if you read 12 volts across the suspected break you know you've found a problem. Even the cheap $5 Harbor Freight meters will work for this. Before you start fixing I'd suggest that you double check the rest of the wiring and prove the meter is working, by measuring from the connector on one side of the window to the connector on the other side. If you don't get 12 volts the problem is elsewhere or the meter is not working.

Thanks for all of the advice. I have talked to 2 glass repair shops and they said that they don"t fix that and suggested the dealer.

I live in WI and for some reason (state law of some sort) my insurance company doesn"t offer cheap glass coverage.

I will try the conductive paint, any place you recommend to get it?

I'm not sure if it would work in your application but I bought some conductive copper-colored paint made for fixing broken or scratched individual grid conductors. This worked to fix several of the horizontal lines that had been badly scratched and didn't get hot. Perhaps if you coated the tab and the surrounding plated on grid material with this paint you could restore conductivity.

Do you have power to the two leads which are connected to the glass heater when you turn the switch on? If not check / replace the fuse.

Is there continuity between the tab which was re-attached and the grid? If no continuity then take to a auto glass dealer and ask them to fix it as they do this sort of work all the time.

If you have a low/no deductible for glass breakage, why not let the insurance company take care of it?
